The journey to build 20 new school toilets in Dong Van

VnExpressVnExpress27/11/2023

Many students are also gradually understanding the importance of school hygiene, knowing how to use the toilet and how to maintain it in the best way. “Before, I felt uncomfortable using the toilet, but I had to gradually adapt. From now on, my friends and I have clean and beautiful toilets, and we don’t have to rush because of the smell and the lack of safety like before. Washing our hands after using the toilet also helps us protect our digestive system better,” said Sung A Ly, a 5A student at Dinh Lung school, Ta Phin Primary and Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities.

Managing, instructing on the use and maintenance of toilets also helps children form good hygiene habits, thereby having good health and preventing diarrhea. "I always wished for a new, more spacious and clean toilet and now it has come true", Du Khanh Ngan, a 4A student at Ma Le Primary and Secondary School happily shared.

Looking at the innocent smiles and hopeful eyes of Dong Van students during the School Hygiene Festival, Ms. Mai Thi Thanh Huong, Head of External Relations of Sanofi Vietnam, was pleased with the project's achievements. "We want to bring a goodeducational environment to students. With the School Hygiene project, students can learn and form good hygiene habits, thereby having enough health to study at school and becoming useful people for society and the community in the future," Ms. Huong believes.

Looking back at the bright works amidst the vast gray rocks of the rocky plateau, the project workers expressed joy and happiness, but also their concerns. “We want to send a message to teachers and students to keep the works clean and beautiful, and try to change their hygiene habits for the sake of those works, so that students and their families can have better health,” said Mr. Vu Ngoc Anh, Head of the School Hygiene Project.

The 2 months since the new toilet was put into use also means that Lo Kim Dung, Sung A Ly and their friends no longer have to worry about going to the toilet at school. From now on, the children have a cleaner and safer learning environment, and the gap in learning conditions between the highlands and the plains seems to have been shortened.

School sanitation is part of the School Light program, which is being implemented with the goal of eliminating degraded toilets and reducing the risk of diarrheal diseases for children in mountainous areas. To date, 69 sanitation facilities have been put into use and 31 others are under construction, supporting more than 20,000 students and teachers in schools in mountainous and disadvantaged areas. This year, the Hope Fund, with the support of the Enterogermina probiotic brand, has relaunched the School Sanitation project in Dong Van, Ha Giang . The project has built 20 standard toilets, supported clean water filtration systems at some schools, and promoted good hygiene habits for students.
