Huawei and Google phones have surpassed Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy line in DxOMark's latest rankings of smartphone camera performance.
Accordingly, Apple's iPhone 16 Pro Max, launched last month, scored 157 points, tied for fourth place.
Powered by the A18 Bionic chip, which uses 3-nanometer processing technology, the iPhone 16 Pro Max boosts performance and power efficiency. Its 16-core Neural Engine enhances AI and machine learning, improves image processing and video encoding. However, this model struggles with zoom and low-light photography.
DxOMark, a French camera testing organization, praised the iPhone 16 Pro Max for its exceptional video quality, but noted that video lost detail at 2x and 5x zoom, as well as noise in low light.
Topping the list is Huawei’s Pura 70 Ultra, which scored 163 points for its impressive camera performance. DxOMark highlighted the Pura 70 Ultra’s superior performance in all lighting conditions, thanks to its AI-powered image processing and variable aperture. The phone was also praised for its natural background blur and accurate portrait focus.
Meanwhile, Google's Pixel 9 Pro XL, which was launched in August, took second place with 158 points. Its AI-powered image processing and machine learning technology deliver strong low-light performance, while its zero shutter lag ensures users can easily capture important moments. DxOMark praised the Pixel 9 Pro XL's autofocus and video stabilization as standout features.
Finally, Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra, which launched earlier this year, ranked 26th with a score of 144. Despite improvements with Samsung's AI-based Pro Visual Engine, DxOMark still noted issues with loss of detail in low-light shots, lag when taking photos, and unstable video.
