According to Indonesian media, the support of a part of the country's fans for Mr. Shin Tae-yong was given after the national team made history by successfully reaching the round of 16 at the 2023 Asian Cup. Although eliminated after a 0-4 defeat to Australia in the round of 16, this achievement is considered a source of pride as the Indonesian team participated in the knockout round of the Asian Cup for the first time.

Coach Shin Tae-yong has brought positive signals with the policy of naturalization and rejuvenation of the Indonesian team.

Although Indonesia has not really had an impressive performance at the 2023 Asian Cup (losing 3 out of 4 matches), many fans of this country still support and call for a contract extension with the Korean coach. Coach Shin Tae-yong's current contract with the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) will expire in June this year.

According to Suara , a petition calling for the contract extension of coach Shin Tae-yong was created by the Indonesian team's fan community on Instagram and Twitter on change.org . The initial petition received 55,000 signatures.

The petition was promoted on social media by the majority of Indonesian team fans who want the contract with the Korean strategist to be extended immediately.

Coach Shin Tae-yong is considered to have brought about significant changes in both the playing tactics and the achievements of the Indonesian team. In addition, there are concerns about PSSI frequently changing coaches when the national team is in the process of being built. Moreover, the change of head coach could affect Indonesia's preparation for the two decisive matches against Vietnam in Group F of the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia next March.

The petition also emphasizes that reaching the quarter-finals of the AFC U-23 Championship this year does not determine Shin Tae-yong's future.
