Dong Nai has a large area of agricultural land and productive forest land suitable for specialized cultivation of medicinal plants or agroforestry models. The province has attracted a number of enterprises to invest in medicinal plant growing areas with high economic value such as Bo Chinh ginseng, Xoa tam phan, Crila chasteberry (of the chasteberry species)..., all of which are valuable medicinal plants with the function of treating many diseases, including cancer.

The advantage of the medicinal plant growing model is to build a chain from production to consumption. In which, enterprises support seeds, transfer techniques from planting, care to harvesting, especially consuming products for farmers.
The model has many advantages
Growing medicinal herbs is a fairly new model for farmers in the province, but it has many advantages to attract farmers to invest.
Director of ETZ Pharmaceutical Investment Joint Stock Company (Hung Thinh Commune, Trang Bom District) Nguyen Van Khon commented that according to the assessment of the World Health Organization, cancer and tumors are increasingly common, so there is a great demand for medicinal plants as raw materials to produce products to treat these diseases. This is also the reason why the company has invested decades in researching, standardizing the process of breeding and growing medicinal plants.
General Director of Dong Nam Duoc Kim Nguyen Trading and Production Joint Stock Company (in Ho Chi Minh City) Huynh Thi Phuoc Minh said that the company has successfully tested organic planting of Bo Chinh ginseng in Phu An commune (Tan Phu district).
This farming model reuses waste and by-products from the growing process, without using fertilizers or chemicals, thus ensuring environmental protection and contributing to emission reduction; at the same time, minimizing input costs and ensuring the quality of output products. All parts of the ginseng plant: leaves, flowers, stems, and roots can be used, thus bringing high economic value to growers.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hung, a farmer growing Xao Tam Phan in Trang Bom district, said that this is a semi-desert plant, so it can be grown on barren land and still produce high medicinal properties. The resistance of this plant is very high, so growers do not need to use chemicals, which both reduces investment costs and ensures standards for clean materials.
“The most favorable thing is that the enterprises in the chain will guide farmers from the seedling stage to the planting and harvesting process. The plant can be harvested from all parts of the stem, leaves, and roots. From the third year, the growers will start harvesting the leaves, and from the sixth year, they will harvest all the branches and roots with high profits,” said Mr. Hung.
Building a medicinal plant cultivation chain
Medicinal herbs are not commonly traded in the market like other common agricultural products. Accordingly, farmers participating in growing medicinal herbs need to join the chain for sustainable development.
Mr. Nguyen Van Khon shared that the company has currently developed 5 product lines, including 2 health food products and 3 regular products: tea and wine. In the coming time, the company will develop more capsule and extract products to maximize the value of this medicinal source, while increasing convenience for users.
Since 2020, the company has always strived to expand the area of raw materials for growing Xao Tam Phan locally and to other growing areas. Up to now, the company has developed nearly 20 hectares of Xao Tam Phan in Trang Bom district and has planted more than 50 hectares in other localities. The company has also just completed a 56-hectare Xao Tam Phan farm in Dak Nong province.
According to Mr. Khon, the company's desire is to contribute to changing the crop structure, expanding the model of growing medicinal herbs with economic value. The company will transfer to farmers seedlings, planting techniques to harvesting in a closed chain, especially the products are guaranteed so farmers no longer have to worry about output floating in the market like other agricultural products.
Sharing the same view, Director of the Crila growing area of Thien Duoc Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company in Dong Nai, Nguyen Kim Manh, affirmed that Crila grown in Long Thanh district has high active ingredients, so the company invested in a large-scale growing area.
The demand for this medicinal plant source is increasing, while the land fund of enterprises is gradually shrinking due to the development of Long Thanh district into an urban area. Accordingly, the enterprise wishes to cooperate with farmers with suitable land funds in the locality, transfer planting, care, harvesting and product consumption techniques to expand the area of this medicinal plant.
