From Highway 22, there is a winding asphalt road leading to Ben Hamlet, An Thanh Commune, Ben Cau District, Tay Ninh Province. From Ben Hamlet, there is a small stone-paved alley leading to Bavet Field. On the field, there is an ancient tree standing tall in the middle of the vast rice fields.
This ancient tree is estimated to be about 12 meters tall, with a wide canopy and lush branches and leaves. In the Bavet rice field, the green color of the ancient tree stands out even more in the middle of the field.
The ancient tree has beautiful roots and rough bark. In some places on the tree trunk, mushrooms grow larger than an adult's hand.
There are holes in the trunk, which are in the process of healing. Covering this ancient tree is a banyan tree. The banyan tree's roots wrap around the trunk, further enhancing the signs of time on this giant tree.
No one knows the scientific name of this tree and when this strange ancient tree appeared in Ben Hamlet field, An Thanh commune, Ben Cau district, Tay Ninh province.
An ancient tree estimated to be about 240 years old stands out in the middle of Bavet field, in Ben hamlet, An Thanh commune, Ben Cau district, Tay Ninh province.
According to Mr. Huynh Van Truyen, 66 years old, former Chairman of the People's Committee of An Thanh Commune, when he was a boy, he often let his buffalo graze on the Bavet field and often came to this tree to rest and avoid the sun. Local people call this tree "the ass of the people" or "the land of the people".
Learning about the origin of this ancient tree, I heard Mr. Tu Du - a descendant of the Le family, the family that owns the agricultural land with this ancient tree, say that in the past, there were many wild trees and weeds in this area.
When Mr. Tu Du's great-grandfather came here to reclaim the land for farming, he saw a strange old tree and left it behind. Later, Mr. Du's great-grandfather passed away, and this land was left to his descendants to continue cultivating.
“It turns out that this ancient “savage” tree has been around since the time of Mr. Tu Du’s great-grandfather. Now, it belongs to the generation of Mr. Tu Du’s grandson who owns this tree. If we calculate the average age of each person is 60 years, over 4 generations, this ancient tree is equivalent to 240 years old,” Mr. Truyen estimated.
The old tree has bristling branches, revealing its old age.
Mr. Truyen added that in the past, under the "dat moi" tree, local people built a small shrine to worship Mr. Ta.
Every year, during rice planting, harvest season or holidays, local people bring sticky rice, meat, and fruit to the temple to burn incense and pray to Mr. Ta for a good harvest and a peaceful life.
In recent years, the temple has been damaged, but local people still regularly come to the tree to burn incense and pray.
Mr. Khuu Thanh Long, born in 1975, Party Cell Secretary and Head of Ben Hamlet Management Board, has a house and cultivated land near the ancient tree, said that currently, this ancient tree stands in the rice field of Mrs. Tran Thi Duom and her husband.
Years ago, when Mr. Le Van Truyen - Mrs. Duom's husband - was still alive, Mr. Truyen often came to burn incense under the tree.
The roots of the banyan tree wrapped around the trunk of this ancient tree add to its old appearance.
Mr. Tran Van Tiem - Mrs. Duom's son-in-law said that in previous years, someone from another place came to the house to buy this tree for tens of millions of dong, but the family did not sell.
He said that in spring, this ancient tree blooms yellow flowers, sporadically. After that, the tree bears fruit.
The fruit of this centuries-old tree is round and small like a green bean. It is not known whether this fruit is edible or not, so no one has dared to eat it.
The bark of the ancient tree is effective in treating joint pain, so sometimes people come to ask for strips of bark to use as medicine.
There was a hole in the tree trunk and over the years the hole became a hollow tree. “I don’t know what caused the hole in the tree.
“Maybe it was caused by bombs from the war. When I was a child, I often played under the shade of a tree and saw a gecko in the hollow of that tree,” said Mr. Tiem.
In some places on the trunk of the ancient tree, mushrooms grow larger than an adult's hand.
In Tay Ninh province, there used to be ancient trees similar to the "lonely myrtle tree" in Go Duoi field (Long Thanh Nam commune, Hoa Thanh town), and the "love palm tree" in Khedol field (Thanh Tan commune, Tay Ninh city).
The above ancient trees have become favorite destinations for many people inside and outside the province through artistic photography works.
If the hundreds of years old tree in Bavet field, Ben hamlet, An Thanh commune, Ben Cau district, Tay Ninh province is cared for, it can become a famous check-in spot for tourists from near and far.
