Cho Moi – Bac Kan Expressway: Open door for economic development

The Cho Moi - Bac Kan expressway is expected to start construction in December 2024. However, according to the investor, Project Management Board 2 (Ministry of Transport), when the historic storm No. 3 (Yagi) occurred, some locations on the route, especially the river and stream areas, had a very large change in water level compared to the previous survey. During the actual drilling process at the site, it was discovered that the geology of some places where the route passes through was unstable, so some items had to be adjusted and moved to other locations.

Therefore, the investor has directed consulting and design units to update the situation and recalculate and adjust the design of some locations to ensure the safety and sustainability of the project during its operation, because this is a project that requires quality and long-term efficiency.

The total investment of the route is over VND 5,750 billion. The total length is nearly 29km, the starting point connects with the Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi BOT road, the end point will later connect with the Bac Kan - Cao Bang expressway (Bac Kan city). The scale of the expressway is designed with a speed of 80km/h, 04 lanes, and a roadbed width of 22m. The connecting section is about 0.4km long, invested with a scale of 02 lanes, a roadbed width of 12m. In the immediate future, the investment will be made in the section connecting from the end of the project to National Highway 3B and connecting with the Bac Kan - Ba Be Lake road (Bac Kan city). This is the largest and most modern traffic project for a mountainous province with difficulties in traffic infrastructure like Bac Kan.

People of Nong Thuong commune agreed to sign the minutes of the compensation plan for site clearance.

The route is designed in a modern manner, suitable for the terrain and geology of the province and the economic development needs of the locality. It is expected that 18 bridges will be built on the route, including 16 bridges on the highway, 02 overpasses, 04 interchanges, including the interchange with National Highway 3; 03 remaining interchanges, including: Intersection connecting with Thanh Binh Industrial Park, intersection with Thanh Mai - Thanh Van Industrial Park, intersection connecting to Bac Kan City. oriented according to the planning, implemented when conditions are sufficient. Construct 02 interchanges at the starting and ending points of the route, including: Intersection connecting with Thanh Binh Industrial Park; intersection with Nong Quoc Chan Street and Bac Kan City - Ba Be Lake Road connecting to Na Hang (Tuyen Quang).

The Cho Moi - Bac Kan expressway project is implemented to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic accidents, and meet transportation needs from Bac Kan to localities in the Northern key economic region; connect the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Bac Kan radial expressway to create a convenient transportation system from the Red River Delta, Hanoi Capital and northern seaports to border gates of Cao Bang province; connect Bac Kan City - Ba Be Lake - Na Hang (Tuyen Quang) and connect with the Tuyen Quang - Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang - Phu Tho, Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressways...

The Cho Moi - Bac Kan route project was approved for investment and construction by the Ministry of Transport. It is a key traffic project and is included in the implementation targets of the Resolution of the 12th Provincial Party Congress, term 2020 - 2025.

A more important goal is that the Project will contribute to promoting the completion of the CT07 expressway as planned from Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Bac Kan - Cao Bang. Connecting with the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen expressway to form a complete expressway section, shortening travel time between Hanoi Capital, Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan province, thereby promoting socio-economic development and national security in the region.

In the first days of 2025, more than 40 households in Nong Thuong commune, Bac Kan city received compensation to move graves. Previously, determining that the project would bring many benefits to their locality and their own families, many households complied with the policy of proactively implementing plans to move assets and constructions even before receiving compensation.

Mr. Nong Van Khoa, Na Ken village, Nong Thuong commune said: “We are very excited when the highway passes through here. Although the issue of graves is related to spiritual factors, because of the general policy of the State, we always comply, choose the date and time to move early at the end of the lunar year, to hand over the site in time for construction work”.

The dream of having an expressway is about to come true. This is the long-standing desire of the government and people in the province. The completion of the project will open the door to attracting investment into Bac Kan province, creating the premise to continue connecting the expressway to Cao Bang province in the near future./.
