Mr. Woo made the call during a debate organized by the Broadcast Journalists Club of Korea in Seoul, saying that the "scope and depth" of allegations surrounding South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee continued to increase, making it difficult for parliament to ignore the issue, according to Yonhap News Agency.
“No one in the previous administrations refused (an investigation) when there were such allegations involving the president’s family or close aides,” Mr Woo said. Mr Woo urged Mr Yoon to “think seriously” about the scandal.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife visited the UK in November 2023
According to Mr. Woo, the Korean public will be puzzled that the prosecutor's investigation review committee recommended indicting a pastor for giving the bag to Ms. Kim, after the same committee had previously recommended not to prosecute her. "In the same case, they recommended not to prosecute the first lady but recommended to prosecute another person," Mr. Woo said.
There is no word yet on President Yoon's response to Mr. Woo's appeal. President Yoon apologized to the people in May for the incident.
Previously, Korean-American pastor Choi Jae-young gave a Dior handbag worth 3 million won (more than 55 million VND) to Ms. Kim at her office in 2022 and secretly filmed the meeting. The video was later released by a media outlet last year.
South Korea's ruling People's Power Party has called on prosecutors to conduct an independent review of the investigation committee's decision to prosecute the pastor.
Prosecutors will make their decision on whether to indict the first lady and Mr. Choi in connection with the handbag scandal, based on the decisions of the above-mentioned committee.
