Working through Tet

Right at the beginning of the new year of Giap Thin 2024, SSIT seaport (Cai Mep - Thi Vai) welcomed a ship of MSC shipping line to handle cargo. The ship docked at 10pm on the 30th of Tet, loaded more than 1,100 containers and left the port safely at 8am on the 1st of Tet.

Previously, on the 30th of Tet, SSIT port also welcomed the MSC Marina ship with a capacity of 86,000 DWT to load and unload more than 3,000 containers and left the port at 8:00 p.m., before New Year's Eve.

SSIT Port welcomes MSC Ameera as the first ship of the year.

Mr. Phan Hoang Vu, Deputy General Director of SSIT Port, said that last week, the cargo handling output at SSIT Port was quite high, reaching about 20,000 TEUs and it is estimated that the port received about 5-6 ships per week. Of which, there were shipping lines loading and unloading about 10,000 TEUs.

According to Mr. Vu, for intra-Asia shipping routes, during Tet, they usually only load and unload about 800-900 containers, while ships on US and European routes will be able to load more, about 2,000 containers. The number of containers loaded and unloaded depends on the shipping route.

According to Eastern beliefs, the first ship to enter the land is often the lucky ship at the beginning of the year. However, the number of ships and ship schedules are difficult to control because they are affected by many objective factors, from wind and waves, geopolitical situations...", SSIT Port leaders shared and added that during the time before Lunar New Year and holidays, the goods are mainly imported goods.

The port still arranges workers and operating departments to be on duty to ensure that aviation operations are not interrupted.

Tan Vu Port representative informed that during the 8-day holiday, the Port is expected to receive about 14 international container ships. On the first day of Tet alone, it will receive about 4 ships. The total handling volume during the holiday is estimated at about 16,000 TEUs.

During this time, the port will allocate all resources to make cargo handling most effective, helping workers work productively and finish earlier to rest. The port's loading and unloading capacity is about 65 moves/hour on average, but during Tet, it will be pushed to make cargo handling faster.

Hai Phong Port also maintains the shift regime for employees during the holiday. The port still receives ships, provides services for loading/unloading goods for export/import, unloading containers for export, lifting/lowering empty containers and other services related to RORO ship operations.

Notably, to support shipping lines/shipping agents and customers during the holidays, the port also has a policy of exempting container storage during the Tet holiday for containers with goods imported from ships (except for refrigerated containers with goods using electricity).

Still prioritize workers' rest

Although arranging human resources to serve shipping lines, SSIT port still prioritizes giving workers time to rest and celebrate Tet.

Accordingly, workers at SSIT port will be given priority not to do cargo on New Year's Eve to welcome the new year. After that, the departments will return to work to ensure.

Mr. Vu informed that at some seaports in the region, during the holidays, shipping lines even have to pay extra fees to the port to maintain the workforce. The reason is that during these days, all costs increase. The salaries of workers also triple.

However, this is hardly applied in Vietnamese seaports. Many ports even give priority and offer free storage to attract and compete.

Mr. Pham Van Ngan, Deputy Director of Tan Vu Port, shared that during Tet, although the operating departments still have to operate, the company still prioritizes giving workers time to rest.

Specifically, the administrative department will take a holiday according to State regulations, while the mining department will be on duty and work 24/7, focusing on allocating resources to ensure cargo handling and ship clearance as quickly as possible.

"In addition, on New Year's Eve, workers will have a break 30 minutes before New Year's Eve and 1 hour after New Year's Eve, then work as usual," said Mr. Ngan.
