According to a June 3 announcement from the Canadian Prime Minister's Office, the above consensus was emphasized in a joint statement by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki, who is visiting Canada.

The joint statement said the two leaders were united in their determination to provide Ukraine with the financial, humanitarian, military and diplomatic support it needs for as long as possible. The Eastern European country needs to be able to defend itself against a conflict with Russia.

The two sides pledged to support Ukraine's transatlantic aspirations with the view that "Ukraine is an integral part of the Euro-Atlantic community".

According to CBC, Prime Minister Morawiecki called on NATO to make plans for Ukraine to join the Western military alliance immediately.

"Poland supports Ukraine's early accession to NATO," but "understands that not all NATO member states agree with this," he added, adding that Poland hopes the issue will be a key focus for NATO leaders at a summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, next month.

In an exclusive interview with CBC News Network , Prime Minister Morawiecki said he has spoken with Prime Minister Trudeau, US President Joe Biden and other allies about establishing a permanent base for allied troops in Poland — similar to the one in South Korea.
