Reporting at the Conference, Mr. Ho Van Phuong - Deputy Head of the Ethnic Minorities Committee of Can Tho City, said: The city currently has 19 ethnic minorities, including 10,051 households, with 36,795 people, accounting for 2.9% of the total population of the city. Of which, the Khmer ethnic group has the largest population, with 23,778 people; the Chinese ethnic group has 12,589 people and 428 people are from other ethnic minorities.
In 2024, the Ethnic Minorities Committee of Can Tho City advised the City People's Committee to issue and submit to competent authorities to issue many documents directing, operating, and implementing ethnic work. Notably, 100% of ethnic minorities use electricity; the rate of communes, wards and towns with car roads to the commune center is 100%; the rate of hamlets (areas) with roads for both seasons is 100%.
In addition, pay attention to investment and create favorable conditions to support the restoration and maintenance of cultural forms of ethnic minorities. The city has effectively implemented the National Target Program on Health: 100% of ethnic minority children under 1 year old are vaccinated, support measures against malnutrition, children under 6 years old are issued health insurance cards. The rate of mobilizing ethnic minority students to go to school at the right age (school year 2023 - 2024) reaches 100% (primary school), 97.94% (junior high school) and 75.7% (high school).
City authorities and sectors have supported the construction of 36 new houses and the repair of 1 house for poor and disadvantaged ethnic minority households. The City Social Policy Bank has disbursed credit programs to 604 ethnic minority households, with a total amount of nearly 20 billion VND (including 557 Khmer households, 42 Chinese households and 5 other ethnic households). By the end of 2024, there will be 29 poor ethnic minority households, accounting for 0.29%, and 346 near-poor households, accounting for 3.44% of the total number of ethnic minority households.
Speaking at the Conference, Mr. Tran Viet Truong - Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, noted that 2025 is a year with many important events such as: Party Congresses at all levels, celebrating important national holidays and a year of emulation, striving to complete the goals, targets and tasks of the 2020 - 2025 term.
On that basis, it is necessary to focus with the highest political determination to effectively implement the Party and State's policies and laws on ethnic minorities, focusing on the Ethnic Strategy for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2045; the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas; focus on vocational training, job creation, lending capital for production development, and effectively solving social security issues among ethnic minorities.
Mr. Tran Viet Truong requested the Ethnic Committee to preside over and coordinate with relevant departments, branches and the People's Committees of Co Do district and O Mon and Ninh Kieu districts to study and advise the City People's Committee to adjust a number of targets, tasks and solutions of Plan No. 213/KH-UBND dated October 20, 2022 of the City People's Committee on implementing the National Target Program on socio-economic development of ethnic minority areas in the city for the period 2021 - 2030, phase I: 2021 - 2025, in accordance with the current situation of the city and ensure funding sources for implementation, striving to complete the goals and targets of phase 1.
