According to statistics from the Publishing Department (Ministry of Information and Communications), on average, a Vietnamese person reads 2.8 books per year. This number is much lower than other countries in the region and the world. In the list of 61 countries that read the most books in the world, Southeast Asia names Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, completely absent from Vietnam.
National Assembly Deputy Bui Hoai Son emphasized that the development of the Internet, smartphones and other digital media has created a variety of entertainment options for young people. These forms of entertainment are often more diverse, attractive and accessible than traditional reading. Therefore, many solutions are needed to attract young readers and help young people get closer to books.
Improving people's knowledge through reading culture
Recently, there have been many debates about whether or not there is a decline in reading culture and whether audiovisual culture is dominating reading culture. What is your perspective?
I have noticed that with the popularity of technology, especially the Internet and digital media, many people have become less interested in reading books, especially traditional printed books. Reading culture is gradually fading and being replaced by more accessible forms of entertainment such as online videos, video games or other entertainment applications.
We are witnessing a growing dominance of visual culture over reading culture. Modern society promotes convenience and speed, making watching videos, listening to podcasts, consuming multimedia content more popular, leading to less time and attention for reading and traditional reading culture.
However, in our country, I still see many people who are passionate about reading and watching information to form their own knowledge. We also need to accept that today's reading culture will have certain changes. Instead of reading books being the most important source of knowledge to build awareness, morality, and lifestyle for people, people can now choose between reading books, watching movies, listening to podcasts, playing video games, and many other forms of entertainment. In fact, many literary works have been adapted into movies or television series. Conversely, some films are also based on literary works, helping to create a richer cultural exploration journey for each individual.
I believe that reading culture is meaningful to each individual and society. It is a way to learn and grasp new knowledge. Through reading, people can discover and understand new aspects of the world, from history, science to culture and art. From there, it helps improve language skills, promote creativity and the ability to think logically. At the same time, it creates an entertaining experience, helping readers escape reality and enter new worlds, discover interesting stories and explore multi-dimensional characters.
Not only that, many books carry moral messages and other noble human values, helping readers better understand these values. From there, develop personal and broad thinking, as well as help solve problems in life, or aim to build goals and shape one's own future, contributing significantly to personal and social development.

How do you evaluate the improvement of people's knowledge, creating an important foundation for the development of each country through developing a reading culture?
I believe that improving people's knowledge through developing a reading culture is an important way to shape and promote the sustainable development of each country. First, reading culture provides people with knowledge and information from history, science, culture to social and political issues, helping to create a well-informed community, which is the foundation for sustainable development.
Reading promotes creativity and critical thinking, thereby creating a dynamic and innovative society, encouraging creativity in many different fields, from art to science and business. At the same time, reading helps raise awareness of ethics and helps build a harmonious, loving and united society; improve each person's language and communication skills, thereby facilitating integration into the international community, communicating effectively in the social environment.
In particular, reading culture helps each person develop personally and professionally, from expanding knowledge to developing skills and abilities necessary for personal work and life.
Digital transformation to attract young readers
Although publishing and book distribution units have made many efforts, young people today seem to no longer be interested in reading books. Why do you think that is?
In my opinion, the development of the Internet, smartphones and other digital media has created a variety of entertainment options for young people. These forms of entertainment are often more diverse, engaging and accessible than traditional reading.
In addition, modern life brings pressure and busyness to young people, from studying, working to social activities and entertainment. The less time, the less opportunities young people have for reading. But there are also some cases where reading is not considered a priority activity in some families or in certain conditions, so young people may not feel much motivation and inspiration to read.
In other cases, young people may not find books that suit their interests and needs. They also do not understand the importance of reading for personal development, thinking and success in life, leading to a lack of interest in reading.
Thus, when we have determined that reading culture is very important, it is necessary to support and encourage from publishing units, families, schools and communities, creating favorable conditions for young people to read books. This is not only good for them but also good for the development of the country.
If culture is considered the "soul, the core" that creates the image of each nation and country, then reading culture also needs to be established with a worthy position in the development process of a country. And first of all, it must start with the youth?
Yes, young people are the future of a country. By encouraging reading from a young age, we are sowing the seeds for their personal and intellectual growth. Interest and habit of reading from a young age can last a lifetime.
Next, the foundation of reading culture needs to be built from the ground up, starting with the youth. If the youth have the habit of reading, they will pass on this value to the next generation, thereby creating a continuous chain of reading culture in society.
The benefits of reading culture not only bring about efficiency in learning and success in the future life of an individual, but also for the prosperity of a country, from education, culture to economy and society. Therefore, I always enjoy a saying of someone: Behind a child who diligently reads books is the bright future of a nation.
E-books are predicted to be the trend of the times. With the number of young readers increasing as it is today, implementing digital transformation activities and applying technology will attract young readers. In your opinion, what fundamental solutions are needed to develop a reading culture in the digital transformation era?
To develop a reading culture in the digital transformation era and attract young readers through e-books, basic solutions are needed. First of all , it is necessary to develop e-book content that suits the interests, needs and lifestyles of young readers such as novels, comics, life skills teaching... with beautiful images, autobiographies of famous people.
Second , focus more on mobile application development and e-book reading platforms. Create mobile applications and online platforms that are user-friendly, easy to use and flexible for reading e-books. Provide features such as cloud storage, bookmarking favorites, social sharing and book recommendations based on personal preferences.
Third , increase marketing and promotion of e-books through the use of digital marketing and outreach strategies to promote e-books to young readers. Use social media, online advertising, other digital marketing campaigns to create awareness and increase engagement with readers.
Fourth , develop interactive features in e-books such as audio, animation, video and other interactive activities to create a more interesting and engaging reading experience for young readers.
Finally , run promotions, discounts, and rewards for young readers when they use e-reading apps, complete reading goals, or participate in online reading communities.
I believe that by applying the above solutions, it is possible to create an interesting environment for young people to participate and develop a reading culture in the digital transformation era.
Thank you, National Assembly Delegate!
