For the first time, a factory applying grapefruit preservation technology was designed and installed by VIAEP in Hanoi to process Dien grapefruit and Tan Lac red grapefruit for businesses exporting to Europe.
Grapefruit harvested from the garden is put into a tank containing peel cleaning solution.
The first batch of grapefruit selected for processing includes two types: Dien grapefruit and Tan Lac red grapefruit purchased by the enterprise in Lac Thuy and Tan Lac districts, Hoa Binh province, which are growing areas with GlobalGap standards, meeting export conditions.
After cleaning, the grapefruit is soaked in a coating solution to preserve it for about 4 months.
After being brought to the factory, the grapefruit will be washed with 2 V-Clean agricultural cleaning solutions to remove pathogens, microorganisms, and residual chemicals on the grapefruit peel. Then, the grapefruit is soaked in a tank of V-Coating solution to create a coating. In particular, this coating helps preserve the grapefruit for about 4 months, but the peel is still shiny, the original color, and the segments are still fresh and juicy.
After cleaning and coating, grapefruit is dried before labeling.
Speaking to Thanh Nien , Mr. Nguyen Manh Hieu, Head of the Department of Agricultural Product Preservation Technology (VIAEP), said that from November 2022, this technology will be applied for the first time to process green-skinned grapefruit exported to the US in the southern provinces, with a preservation time of 3 months.
Those involved in the grapefruit processing are all VIAEP technical staff.
VIAEP scientists then developed a grapefruit preservative, extending the shelf life to four months. This is also the first time this technology has been applied to grapefruit in the northern provinces.
VIAEP staff preserve and package grapefruit
"The grapefruit treatment and preservation product we have researched contains beeswax and some organic substances, meeting the technical standards of the European market," said Mr. Hieu.
According to Mr. Nguyen Manh Hieu, this processing line was researched and designed by VIAEP scientists with many manual steps, so the capacity is only about 1 ton/hour. Meanwhile, at a southern enterprise, the grapefruit processing line invested in complete equipment by the enterprise has a processing capacity of 3.5 tons/hour.
Processed grapefruit is canned.
It is expected that in the first year of installation in Hanoi, VIAEP's factory will process about 50 - 70 tons of grapefruit for businesses exporting to the UK and Czech Republic.
