On the morning of August 22, the first session of the 7th National Assembly of Cambodia continued working on the election of the President, Vice President of the National Assembly and the leadership of specialized committees of the National Assembly, and conducted a vote of confidence for the Royal Government of the new term.
The Cambodian Constitution stipulates that the opening session of the first session of the National Assembly is convened and chaired by the King, and is chaired by a senior member - the oldest elected candidate - to declare the parliamentary status of each member in the new legislature.
This senior member of parliament is responsible for leading the process of electing the President and Vice President of the National Assembly, as well as the personnel of the specialized committees of the National Assembly, at the proposal of the party with the most seats. The election is conducted and decided by a vote of confidence by an absolute majority of the total number of parliamentarians.
After the new term of the National Assembly officially takes effect, the King appoints a figure as prime minister to form a new government according to the proposal of the political party with the most seats in the National Assembly.
Article 119 of the Cambodian Constitution stipulates that the proposal of the party with the most seats in the National Assembly must be sent to the President of the National Assembly; at the same time, it requires that the person appointed as Prime Minister must be a member of parliament and have only one Cambodian nationality since birth.
