Presenting to the jury about the reason why she went astray, Truong Thi Thuy Van burst into tears: "The defendant is upset and depressed because 11 years have passed, and she still has not been fortunate enough to have the gift of motherhood"...
On the morning of May 30, the People's Court of Thach Ha district held an online trial of the first instance case of Truong Thi Thuy Van (born in 1985) and Tran Quoc Phung (born in 1987), both residing in Tien Bo village, Tan Lam Huong commune, for the crime of "Illegal possession of narcotics".
The defendant's justification for his crime, although personal and unconvincing, still made the audience think a lot.
Truong Thi Thuy Van and her husband - Tran Quoc Phung (born in 1987, residing at the same address) were tried by the People's Court of Thach Ha district for the crime of "Illegal possession of narcotics". Previously, at 10:00 p.m. on January 11, 2023, through inspection, the working group of Thach Ha district police discovered drugs hidden in the house of Phung and Van. Because Phung admitted that the drugs were hers, the working group made a record of the husband being caught red-handed.
Then, on January 12, January 13 and February 22, the Investigation Police Agency of Thach Ha District Police conducted an emergency search of the couple's residence and seized drugs hidden in many locations in the house. At this time, Truong Thi Thuy Van confessed that she had hidden the drugs for the purpose of using them.
According to the forensic conclusion, the couple had hidden 120.3138g of synthetic drugs in the form of crystal meth and MDMA. Of which, Van illegally stored 102.845g of drugs and Phung hid 17.4688g. During the interrogation at the first instance trial, the couple clearly and concisely stated the course of their crimes. However, when asked about the reason for their loss of direction, Phung suddenly became pensive while Van burst into tears. The question from the panel of judges seemed to touch the defendant's emotional wound. "The defendant is depressed and helpless because she has been married for 11 years, but since then, she has not had the opportunity to fulfill her role as a mother..." - Van choked.
Defendant Van answered questions from the prosecutor's representative.
12 years ago, Van and Phung had the chance to meet and get to know each other. After a short time, their love "blossomed" and only one year later (2012), the young couple decided to become husband and wife amid the joy of both families. The family would be even happier if there was the laughter of the little "angels". However, 1 year, 2 years, and then 11 years passed, and that seemingly simple wish still could not come true.
According to Tran Quoc Phung, during the years of searching for complete happiness, instead of actively working, doing good and hoping, both husband and wife became depressed and filled their sadness with drugs. Van explained that because she suffered from the after-effects of an accident, she wanted to use drugs to reduce the pain.
More importantly, due to long-term infertility and unsuccessful treatment, Van and Phung gradually became depressed and lost faith in life. Therefore, the couple lost themselves and fell.
The jury questioned the defendants.
During the questioning and debate, the panel of judges and the representative of the prosecutor's office analyzed and clarified the criminal acts of each defendant. Truong Thi Thuy Van and Tran Quoc Phung honestly admitted their mistakes.
Having the last word, Van hopes that the jury will consider giving her the lightest sentence possible so that she has a chance to start her life over and continue her unfinished journey to find happiness.
The verdict of the People's Court of Thach Ha district with a total sentence of 20 years in prison for 2 defendants for the crime of "Illegal possession of drugs" is a warning for each of us, that happiness only comes to those who know how to wait with the most positive attitude.
