Weight gain, boredom after Tet
This year, Ms. Ngo My Ha (from Bac Giang) decided to spend a whole week of Tet holiday with her maternal family, after many years of going back and forth between her paternal family for 3 days and her maternal family for 3 days. Although she was able to rest comfortably with her relatives and feel comfortable during the holiday, Ms. Ha was sad because her weight increased uncontrollably.
"I was really shocked when my weight increased by 3 kg after Tet holiday. I ate a lot without any restrictions, especially my favorite dish, fried banh chung... Now I'm sick of everything on the dinner table," said Ms. Ha.
A diet high in protein and fat during Tet makes many people gain weight and get bored quickly.
As for Mr. Tran Van Tung (in Hanoi), during the 7-day Tet holiday, his family of 4 only had one meal at home after burning votive papers. The rest of the time, his family went to relatives' houses to wish them a happy new year and then sat down to dinner.
Returning to daily life, Mr. Tung was disappointed: "Before Tet, every dish looked delicious, and everyone in my family ate very enthusiastically. After Tet, there is still leftover food that needs to be finished, but when the meal is served, no one wants to touch it with chopsticks."
According to Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, Specialist II, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, signs of physical fatigue after Tet are inevitable. The cause of psychological fatigue after Tet is because the long holiday causes changes in daily life. Before and during Tet, everyone is busy and tired from cleaning the house, eating, visiting relatives and friends.
Dr. Ngo Chi Cuong, Head of Internal Medicine Department, Medlatec General Hospital said: "Tet meals often have excess protein and fat from chicken, beef, fried foods, while there are few boiled dishes and green vegetables, which can easily make people gain weight and get bored quickly. Accordingly, each person needs to establish a nutritional regimen to help purify the body, release excess energy and improve taste."
3 solutions to help purify the body
According to health experts, to recover after Tet, people need to plan to return to work. If you feel tired, arrange time to work and rest and relax. In addition to changing your diet, you need to increase physical activity; sleep on time, sleep on time and wake up on time...
After Tet, you should adjust to your daily life, because there are many changes before, during, and after Tet that contribute to improving health and quality of life.
Drink enough water: To purify the body, people should drink enough 2 liters of water/day because water brings many benefits such as helping joints function better, heart health and smooth skin. In addition to filtered water, people can use lemon juice, green tea, or coconut water instead.
Dr. Huynh Tan Vu also recommends drinking plenty of water, but not too much. Drinking 4 glasses of water (1 liter) during 8 hours at work, not including tea, coffee, cold drinks, fruit juice and 2 glasses of water in the evening is optimal. You should not drink more than 2 liters of water per day because the process of "eliminating" this excess water will "lose" many important minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium), even causing water poisoning.
Supplementing foods rich in fiber from green vegetables and fruits: Dr. Cuong believes that supplementing the amount of fiber lost after meals with excess protein during Tet is an important "key" to help the body quickly regain balance. Fiber contains many vitamins and minerals and helps increase intestinal motility, improving the body's digestive function.
Some effective types of fiber recommended by experts include: green beans, red beans, string beans, cowpeas, peas, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, cabbage, carrots, kohlrabi, mushrooms... providing insoluble fiber, helping to limit fat absorption and eliminate toxins from the body.
Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, etc. are rich in vitamin B, iron, magnesium, potassium, and glycine, which help protect liver cells, promote the detoxification process, and support the immune system.
Raw vegetables, herbs, etc. provide the body with vitamins that are fully preserved, with less loss than cooked vegetables. However, people should remember to wash vegetables before eating to avoid parasitic diseases.
Fruits that do not contain too much sugar and have effective cleansing and detoxifying properties such as oranges, guavas, apples, grapefruit, pineapples, etc.
Appropriate diet and exercise: To improve the situation of consuming too much protein-rich foods during Tet, experts say people should replace beef and chicken with fish, shrimp, crab, etc. to still provide enough protein and calcium for the body but not contain too many calories and bad fats.
According to Dr. Vu, it is necessary to have a balanced and diverse food source; eat less fat, increase fiber; do not skip breakfast; have healthy snacks by choosing low-sugar, low-fat types, should eat fresh fruit, low-sugar yogurt...
Add more grains such as brown rice, quinoa, barley, oats... which are foods containing healthy unsaturated fats, providing lots of fiber, vitamins, essential minerals and helping to effectively improve toxins.
"In particular, stay away from crash diets and weight loss pills, which are not good for your health," Dr. Vu recommends.
In addition to adjusting the diet, experts advise people to combine physical exercise methods suitable for their physical condition such as walking, cycling, yoga, aerobics... to help relax muscles, purify the body by sweating a lot, and at the same time support energy release and effective weight control.
In particular, people should not forget to "clean" the kitchen and remove leftover foods from Tet because most of them contain a lot of harmful fats and are stored for a long time, which is not good for health.
