UV rays not only affect skin tissues but also cause DNA breaks, causing cells to grow out of control. These abnormal cells quickly divide to form a mass of cancer cells. Therefore, using sunscreen to protect against the effects of sunlight on the skin is very important.
There are two common types of sunscreen:
Chemical sunscreen: Helps absorb the sun's rays, reducing the harmful effects of UV rays on the skin. This type of cream tends to be easily absorbed and leaves little white residue on the skin.
Physical sunscreen: creates a protective layer, increases the reflection of sunlight, recommended for sensitive skin.
Dr. Kim Dung said that not only in the summer but in any season of the year, you need to use sunscreen to protect your skin. A good sunscreen is one that can protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
Sunscreen packaging usually lists the SPF and PA indexes. SPF 30-50-70 is equivalent to 96-98% protection against UVB rays. For effective sun protection, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Meanwhile, PA is an index that helps evaluate the level of skin protection against UVA rays. Normally, the PA index is shown with a plus sign, with the protection ability in order. In which, PA 4+ will protect the skin up to 90%, type 3+ is 70%, type 2+ is average and 1+ is the lowest level of protection.

Applying sunscreen not only helps protect the skin from external factors, such as sunburn, but also prevents aging and skin cancer. To use sunscreen effectively, users need to note that not all ingredients in sunscreen are beneficial. Therefore, it is necessary to read the instructions carefully, look at the ingredients in sunscreen to choose the most suitable product for the skin. Do not use expired sunscreen because it can cause skin allergies.
Use the right amount of sunscreen: use about 1-2g for the entire face and about 30g for the entire body each time you apply. You should apply the cream to all areas that are not covered by clothing, including the ears, neck, chest, arms, hands, etc. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out and reapply every two hours to protect your skin all day.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Dung noted that applying sunscreen to protect the skin is a very good habit but it is not enough if there are no other protection methods such as combining it with a cloth mask, wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. At the same time, you should limit exposure to sunlight between 10am and 4pm.
