Vietnamese scientists master fireproof paint technology

Steel is likened to the backbone that supports a building. When a fire breaks out, the temperature increases rapidly, causing the steel structure to lose stability, leading to collapse.

In public buildings, it is essential to ensure that building occupants have sufficient time to escape in the event of a fire.

Therefore, choosing high quality fireproof paint is extremely important and it only shows its effectiveness when a fire occurs.

Fireproof paint has the ability to form an insulating layer on the steel surface by foaming at high temperatures. Therefore, the steel structure is heated slowly. The insulating foam helps the steel structure to be stable for 30 - 120 minutes.

Faced with the above reality, the Institute of Materials Science (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) has developed a research project on fireproof paint technology using modified additives.

This project was conceived in 2013, when foreign fireproof paint products first appeared in the Vietnamese market.

According to Dr. Nguyen Viet Dung, Head of Polymer and Composite Materials Research Department, Institute of Materials Science, by 2018, the unit had completed the formula for fireproof paint products containing modifiers as well as consulting and transferring modifiers to domestic fireproof paint manufacturing enterprises.

The product, as soon as it was launched, showed a difference compared to existing products on the market in both properties and price.

By early 2021, when the management agency changed the requirements for testing fireproof paint products (Decree 136) towards improving quality and being closer to actual requirements, the unit started researching and testing new fireproof paint product systems according to ISO 834-10:2014 and BS EN 13381-8:2013 standards.

After completing the research, the Institute of Materials Science has cooperated with enterprises to start testing the product on structural samples according to current standards. The sample testing process according to ISO 834-10:2014 standard was successful in early 2022.

On that basis, the partner enterprise of the Institute of Materials Science has begun the process of officially registering and testing fireproof paint products to protect steel structures with the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department.

After nearly 1 year of testing and completing legal procedures, by March 2023, the fireproof paint product using modifiers provided by the Institute of Materials Science was officially certified by the Department of Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue (Ministry of Public Security).

The successful development of a new system of additives for fireproof paint has helped thousands of domestic steel structure construction projects and factories meet fire safety acceptance conditions to go into operation.

The results of research cooperation between the Institute of Materials Science and domestic fireproof paint manufacturers were highly appreciated by the Fire Prevention and Rescue Association during a working session with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

According to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the product of modifying additives for fireproof paint has been developed steadily and continuously, bringing in large revenue for the Institute of Materials Science.

In 2023 alone, the contract amount from fireproof paint products of the Institute of Materials Science reached over 17 billion VND.

This figure has affirmed the role of scientists and the potential of research projects with high scientific content, contributing to bringing valuable products to businesses, people and society.
