Districts upstream of Tien River improve effectiveness of natural disaster response

Due to the complicated developments of natural disasters, the upstream districts of Tien River, Cai Lay and Cai Be (Tien Giang), are proactively taking response measures to protect production as well as the safety of people's lives and property according to the motto "4 on-site".

Vice Chairman of Cai Be District People's Committee Phan Thanh Son said that in order to improve the effectiveness of natural disaster response, in 2024, the district invested over 181.6 billion VND in natural disaster prevention and control projects, protecting the specialty fruit growing area south of National Highway 1 and the high-quality rice growing area north of National Highway 1. In Cai Lay district, since the beginning of 2024, the locality has constructed 21 irrigation works, dredged canals and ditches to drain floods, built sluices to prevent salinity combined with flood and high tide prevention with a total estimated cost of over 7.5 billion VND. The projects are effectively responding to natural disasters during the 2024 flood season. With a dense network of rivers and canals, Cai Lay and Cai Be districts are heavily affected by annual floods, causing many consequences. In particular, riverbank erosion is complicated and increasingly serious. According to statistics, in the two localities, there are currently hundreds of large and small landslides, with an estimated cost of 76 billion VND needed to repair them. Therefore, the leaders of the districts upstream of the Tien River requested that communes and towns urgently consolidate the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue; proactively deploy and disseminate effective response measures to all levels, sectors and all classes of people. In particular, relevant parties are on duty 24/7 to promptly handle possible emergency situations; regularly update the situation of floods, natural disasters, flood warnings, and high tides so that people know and join hands to respond, not to cause damage to production and ensure the safety of people's lives.

Communes and towns proactively review and complete response plans for each type of natural disaster that may occur, especially storms, floods, high tides, and landslides; at the same time, identify key vulnerable areas to arrange forces and means to be ready to respond and rescue when situations arise. Localities urgently inspect and review the system of dykes, embankments, low-lying areas, areas with high risk of flooding, and vulnerable locations at risk of incidents to reinforce and upgrade degraded, low-lying dykes and embankments to protect orchards, especially those with high economic value; protect aquaculture ponds, harvest crops, and upland crops that are ready for harvest; Prevent flooding in urban areas, low-lying areas... At the same time, closely monitor and update weather developments and natural disaster warnings to proactively prevent and respond to storms, tornadoes, lightning, heavy rain, high tides, and landslides that may occur...
