A pod of orca caused a terrifying night for sailors on a yacht off the coast of Spain when they bit through the hull, causing water to flood the vessel.

British sailor April Boyes shared a video showing a pod of orca swimming close to and violently ramming into a yacht, causing another person to scream in terror. They surrounded the yacht off Gibraltar on May 26th before ramming it multiple times. Each ramm caused increasing damage to the vessel, destroying the rudder and puncturing the hull. The attack by the orca caused water to flood the engine room, forcing the crew to call for help from authorities, according to Yahoo .
Finally, the four sailors could breathe a sigh of relief when a Spanish rescue ship and helicopter arrived in their direction in the middle of the night. They were rescued by the coast guard, and the 20-meter yacht was towed to the port of Barbate in Cadiz province for repairs.
"The encounter, which seemed unique, ended with the orca destroying the rudder from the boat, then biting several places on the boat for an hour. A large hole in the hull caused water to flood other parts of the boat and the engine room. It was a terrifying experience. We were all safe. I feel very grateful to the coast guard," Boyes shared.
This incident occurred after at least 20 orca attacked a small boat in the Strait of Gibraltar this month. Researchers speculate that a female orca named White Gladis, having been injured in a collision with a boat, taught her pod to attack vessels around Gibraltar. They believe White Gladis was seeking revenge by instructing the orca pod to sink two yachts. The pain from collisions or entanglement in fishing nets may have fueled her animosity towards boats.
The attack on Boyes' yacht proves that orca pods will relentlessly target small boats. On May 2nd, approximately six orca rammed the Bavaria 46 yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar. The hour-long ambush left two passengers from Cambridge shocked and confused, and caused thousands of dollars in damage.
