(CLO) The 5.48 meter long Australian crocodile that once held the record for the world's largest crocodile in captivity has passed away. It is believed to have been over 110 years old.
The Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Green Island near the tourist town of Cairns in Queensland, Australia, said on November 2 that Cassius, a crocodile weighing more than a ton, had died. He had been in poor health since October 15.

"He was very old and is believed to have outlived a wild crocodile. We will miss Cassius greatly. His love and memory will be forever in our hearts," the sanctuary said.
The crocodile has lived at the sanctuary since 1987. It was brought in from the neighbouring Northern Territory, where crocodiles play an important role in the region's tourism industry.
Cassius, a saltwater crocodile, holds the Guinness World Record as the world's largest crocodile living in captivity.
It took the title after the death of Lolong, a crocodile in the Philippines, which measured 6.17 metres (20 feet) long, according to Guinness.
