Sea goby, also known as sculpin, has a body larger than a thumb, about 10 - 20 cm long, looks like a freshwater goby. Sea goby lives in large concentrations in the coastal plains of the Central region.
In the Mo Duc coastal area of my hometown, fishermen catch sea goby all year round, but mostly during the summer months.
During this time, the sea is calm, so fishing is quite favorable for fishermen. Fishermen only need to sail a few nautical miles from shore and cast their nets to catch sea goby.
The meat of the goby fish is delicious so it can be made into salad, braised or fried, etc. But in the memories of coastal people, the "grilled" goby fish dish is the most favorite dish.
Grilled fish is a rustic yet irresistibly delicious dish that you will remember as a familiar memory no matter where you go.

Sea goby fish have just been caught and brought ashore by fishermen in Mo Duc district, Quang Ngai province.
I remember when my brothers and I were young, on summer days we often followed our mother to the beach to sit and enjoy the breeze while waiting for our father to return to shore after a day at sea.
On days when we caught a lot of fish, my father would laugh heartily while standing with his fellow boatmen removing the fish. My brothers and I would also quickly select the big round sea gobies, bring them to the edge of the waves and wash off the sand.
Then, some of us lit a fire, some of us chose small casuarina branches to stick into the fish's body. The fish was grilled on a charcoal fire from the red-hot casuarina wood, the sound of the fish fat sizzling.
The sound of saliva dancing in my throat. After a few minutes, when the outer scales of the goby turned golden brown, it was just cooked. The smell of grilled fish wafted up on the sea breeze, filling the whole sky.
Holding a hot grilled sea goby in hand, gently peeling off the outer shell to reveal the white meat, using your fingers to rub a little salt and chili into your mouth...
The sweetness, chewiness and aroma of the fish, along with the salt and chili flavor, combined with the flavor of the ocean, created an indescribable delicious feeling. Blowing, eating and sniffing at the same time, all of us enjoyed it, because the taste of grilled sea goby can be said to be "irresistibly delicious!"

Grilled sea goby in Quang Ngai makes many people crave for it because of its delicious and sweet taste.
It is also the simplicity and rusticity of this rustic grilled dish that has followed us throughout our childhood until now.
Now, when we occasionally return to our hometown and meet old friends, we often make an appointment to meet at our hometown beach to enjoy grilled sea goby.
Sitting on the sand, the sound of the waves, the clear moon, the cool breeze, next to the charcoal stove, the aroma of grilled fish wafts out. The fresh sweetness of the fish, the salty taste of the sea, the spiciness of the chili, plus a glass of mild country wine, how interesting.
If you have the opportunity to visit the coastal area of Mo Duc (Quang Ngai province), you should enjoy grilled sea goby to feel the rich taste of the sea and understand more about the life of fishermen here...
