On the morning of December 27, taking advantage of going to the market to buy a tray of five fruits to decorate the Tet altar before the whole family packed up and returned to their hometown, Ms. Pham Thi Tra in Vuong Thua Vu (Thanh Xuan, Hanoi) was quite surprised when the gold bar grapefruit for fortune was only 320,000 VND/pair of the beautiful type.
Last year, for the Lunar New Year, she had to pay 1.2 million VND for this pair of grapefruits. This year, her salary and bonus have decreased, so she plans to switch to buying regular grapefruits to display on the five-fruit tray to fit her family's limited Tet spending budget.
“A month ago, I still saw shops selling gold bar grapefruit for nearly 1 million VND/pair, but now I see them everywhere at the market. I chose a pair that I really liked for only 320,000 VND with all the branches and leaves,” she shared.
In recent years, every Tet holiday, gold bar grapefruits have appeared on the market at sky-high prices, due to their unique shape.
In mid-January, Mr. Huynh Thanh Tam in An Khanh (Chau Thanh, Ben Tre) said that he had 1,500 grapefruits shaped like gourds, gold bars, apricot blossoms, and coins to serve the Tet market of Giap Thin. The price of grapefruits shaped like gold bars ranges from 1.2 to 1.5 million VND/pair.
In Hau Giang, this year, members of the gourd pomelo production club in Phu Huu commune (Chau Thanh) provided more than 1,000 shaped pomelos to serve the Tet market. Mr. Vo Trung Thanh, Chairman of the club, informed that nearly 80% of the members' products have been ordered by customers. This year, the fruit is beautiful but the selling price has decreased by more than 10% compared to last year, about 1.4 million VND/pair of type 1.
However, in the days before Lunar New Year, gold bar grapefruits are being sold by traders, shops, and "online markets" at quite cheap prices. Accordingly, VIP gold bar grapefruits are only 650,000 VND/pair, type 2 prices range from 250,000-350,000 VND/pair.
The price of royal pomelos has also cooled down and is "dying" the Lunar New Year market red. Specifically, the VIP jar-shaped red pomelo with branches and leaves costs 230,000-350,000 VND/fruit; the 5-6 tael type costs 100,000-150,000 VND/fruit; some stores even sell it for only 50,000 VND/fruit - equivalent to the price of pomelos usually sold in the market.
Ms. Cu Thi Hai Ly, owner of a fruit shop in Hai Ba Trung (Hanoi), shared that in previous years, gold bar grapefruit and royal red grapefruit caused a fever, and were still sold out for millions of dong. However, in the past 2-3 years, the supply of these types of grapefruit has been abundant, and the price of grapefruit has been decreasing day by day.
“This year, people are tightening their purse strings for Tet shopping, so goods are somewhat sluggish. Red grapefruits and gold bars are typical Tet products, but consumption is slow, so we have to reduce prices and sell them all before Tet, even at a loss,” Ms. Ly worried. Moreover, these two types of grapefruit are only beautiful to look at, the quality of the segments cannot be as good as other types of grapefruit.
At Ms. Ly's store, there are still more than 100 pairs of gold bar grapefruits and nearly 500 red grapefruits of all kinds. Meanwhile, the peak shopping season is only today and tomorrow. By December 29, the Tet holiday begins, everyone returns to their hometowns, so there will be few customers.
Most online merchants will stop selling Tet goods after the 28th of the lunar calendar. Therefore, all grapefruit orders must be delivered to customers, and the remaining must be sold before the 29th of the twelfth lunar month.
