Rough diamonds mined in Botswana
Diamonds currently account for 40% of Botswana’s government revenue, a third of its gross domestic product and 75% of its foreign exchange earnings. In 2022, Botswana produced 20% of the world’s rough diamonds (after Russia) and was the world’s largest producer of mined diamonds by value.
However, the natural diamond market has not improved in the past two years, partly because more and more consumers prefer cheaper synthetic diamonds.
Synthetic diamonds are gradually replacing natural diamonds.
Mr. Masisi is preparing to participate in the JCK Show, the world's largest jewelry exhibition, held this year in Las Vegas (Nevada, USA) from May 31 to June 3. Mr. Masisi's goal at this event is to promote Botswana as the world's number one producer of natural diamonds of origin.
