Recently, the AFC has made decisions on changing the format and organization of continental club tournaments.
Hanoi FC is the representative of V-League to participate in the group stage of AFC Champions League 2023-2024
Accordingly, AFC will launch an additional tournament considered as third-class.
Notably, from the 2024-2025 season, the national championship rankings will be based on the achievements of the clubs in that National Championship in the previous 8 years combined.
Thus, the 2024-2025 season rankings will be added from 2014 to 2022.
With the new scoring method of AFC, the Vietnam National Championship (V-League) is only ranked 7th in the East Asia region and has no representative participating in the AFC Champions League 2024-2025.
Besides, V-League will have 1 representative going straight to the AFC Cup group stage and 1 play-off spot.
The Thai League has 1 direct entry and 1 play-off spot for the AFC Champions League and 1 team participating in the AFC Cup group stage.
Meanwhile, Malaysia will have 2 direct tickets to the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup.
In the 2023-2024 season, V-League still has 1 ticket to the AFC Champions League and 1 ticket to the AFC Cup. In addition, there is also 1 ticket to the AFC Champions League qualifying round.
Specifically, Hanoi FC won the right to enter the AFC Champions League group stage. Hai Phong won the right to play in the AFC Champions League qualifying round or go straight to the AFC Cup.
Not long ago, the Licensing Board of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) licensed 7 clubs to participate in the AFC club tournament in the 2023-2024 season, including: Hanoi, Hai Phong, HAGL, Binh Duong, Nam Dinh, Da Nang and Ha Tinh.
License with penalty for Thanh Hoa Club. Not license for Binh Dinh, SLNA, Viettel and Ho Chi Minh City due to not meeting AFC's mandatory regulations and criteria.
