On the morning of July 1, President of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) Somyot Poompunmuang suddenly announced his resignation after 7 years in office.
Thailand at risk of being banned from competition by FIFA
Thai media said that Mr. Somyot's sudden decision was partly due to pressure from Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Thai Olympic Committee Prawit Wongsuwan.
Previously, during the annual congress of the Olympic Committee of Thailand on the morning of June 30, the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand harshly criticized the President of FAT and asked him to resign.
Regarding this, the Daily News commented: "Mr. Somyot resigned after the directive speech of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan.
This decision could result in Thai football being banned by FIFA for allowing politics to interfere in sports.”
One Southeast Asian team that received a ban from FIFA was Indonesia when the country's state management agencies intervened in the operation of the country's professional football league.
“We are at great risk of being banned from international football activities by FIFA due to officials resigning at the request of another body,” the Daily News continued.
Since taking power in 2016, Mr. Somyot Poompunmuang has not received the trust of many other FAT officials.
In addition, the former FAT President also could not help Thai football complete two goals: entering the top 100 FIFA and winning a ticket to the World Cup.
