On the morning of October 25, at the Government Guest House, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son welcomed and held talks with Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis.
At the invitation of Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis paid an official visit to Vietnam from October 25-26.
The visit of the Lithuanian Foreign Minister is of great significance, first of all to promote the exchange of delegations at all levels and review and propose specific directions to strengthen bilateral relations in many areas where both sides have strengths such as coordination in the international arena, agricultural cooperation and technology transfer.
Vietnam and Lithuania established diplomatic relations in 1992 and over the past three decades, the two governments have always attached importance to and paid attention to consolidating and enhancing the good traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two sides.
The Lithuanian people always have good feelings for Vietnam and in 2021, Lithuania supported Vietnam with 168,700 doses of Covid-19 vaccine to help Vietnam overcome the pandemic. The two sides always support each other in the international arena, especially at the United Nations (UN) forum.
Most recently, in April 2023, Lithuania supported the Resolution commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action (VDPA) proposed and drafted by Vietnam. Lithuania has sent representatives to attend international forums such as the 9th IPU Global Meeting of Young Parliamentarians (September 2023) and the OECD-Southeast Asia Ministerial Forum (October 2023) when Vietnam hosts them. Lithuania highly appreciates the efforts of host Vietnam in successfully organizing these international events in Hanoi.
The two countries have great potential to promote cooperation in areas where both sides have strengths. First of all, we can mention the prospect of strengthening cooperation in education, which has been built since the time of the former Soviet Union. Strengthening educational cooperation between the two countries can help Vietnamese students access a potential study abroad market, with good prices and opportunities to participate in the European job market.
Regarding tourism, Lithuania focuses on the digital economy, making tourism, especially ecotourism and agritourism, a key economic sector. The Lithuanian government has introduced many policies to attract local tourism, applying artificial intelligence (AI) to tourism management and promotion.
In addition, technology transfer cooperation is also a promising field, as the Lithuanian Government pays special attention to providing public services with fast speed and good quality. Currently, Lithuania ranks 7th in e-Government standards in Europe 2023.
Lithuania is currently building a giant technology campus - the largest in Europe - in its capital Vilnius, aiming to become the new tech capital of the Baltic region, worth 100 million euros ($109.6 million), spanning 55,000 square meters and employing 5,000 people. Tech Zity manages three technology campuses in Vilnius, including Tech Park, Tech Loft and Tech Spa, which are home to companies such as Google, Bored Panda and Kilo Health. Vietnam can cooperate with Lithuania in the fields of security research, artificial intelligence, technology services, e-government.
Lithuania attaches great importance to implementing its commitments at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) and meeting the EU's requirement to achieve net zero emissions. According to the National Energy Plan and Climate Action Plan of the Republic of Lithuania for 2021-2030, Lithuania aims to have a share of renewable energy in energy consumption of 45% by 2030 - one of the most ambitious plans for the development of renewable energy sources in the EU, in which 45% of electricity and 90% of district heating energy will come from this energy source.
Currently, Vietnam also attaches importance to developing renewable energy sources with the goal of the proportion of renewable energy sources in the total primary energy supply reaching about 15-20% by 2030; 25-30% by 2045.
To achieve these ambitious goals, the two sides can exchange experiences in policy making, environmental management, enhance expert exchanges, learn about the research process, and implement policies on the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS)...
