In a recent press conference, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan said that prosecutors do not have enough space to display evidence and money confiscated from corruption suspects.

The Jakarta Post on January 4 quoted Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan as saying that law enforcement agencies had confiscated 6,700 billion rupiah (10,515 billion VND) in cash from corruption suspects in just the first 3 months of President Prabowo Subianto's administration.

The information was given at a press conference co-hosted by Mr Budi with Attorney General ST Burhanuddin on January 2. Minister Budi said that there was not enough space for prosecutors to display evidence, so the cash was kept in a safe managed by the Attorney General's Office (AGO).

"Initially, we planned to put them in this room, but after taking some measurements, we found it was still not enough. I can tell you it's that much," Mr. Budi said at a press conference.

During his campaign before taking office as president on October 20, 2024, Mr. Prabowo vowed to crack down on corruption and planned to come up with new ways to eliminate it. Anti-corruption activists say Indonesia's anti-corruption campaign has slowed down over the past 10 years.

Last month, President Prabowo said he could pardon people convicted of corruption if they returned stolen goods. Speaking to hundreds of students in Cairo during a visit to Egypt on December 18, Prabowo said he would implement a plan to confiscate corrupt assets in the coming months.

However, speaking later on Christmas, Mr Prabowo denied that he would pardon corrupt criminals, saying he only wanted them to "repent" and return the money they had taken to pay for their crimes.
