With this price, the Codex Sassoon has surpassed the Codex Leicester - Leonardo da Vinci's scientific handbook to become the most expensive book in the world. Previously, the Codex Leicester was purchased by billionaire Bill Gates for $30.1 million in 1994. However, this Bible is still not the most expensive text of all time, that title belongs to the first copy of the US Constitution - sold for $43.2 million in 2021.

According to Sotheby's, the Codex Sassoon contains all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible. Researchers say the book was created in the late 9th or early 10th century, making it the oldest Hebrew Bible in the world.

The successful bidder for the Bible was the American Friends of the ANU - Jewish Museum in Tel Aviv. The acquisition of the book was also supported by a large contribution from the family of former US Ambassador to Romania Alfred H. Moses. The Sassoon Codex will then be transferred to the Jewish Museum in Tel Aviv (formerly the Museum of the Jewish Community).
