Choose to study at the school with the lowest admission score in Hanoi because of "acquaintances"
Do Chi Tien was born into a poor family. His father and sister were deaf from birth and unable to work. The family's economic burden was shouldered by his mother. Tien's mother worked in agriculture, doing whatever jobs were hired, with an unstable income.
That is part of the reason why Tien did not take the entrance exam to the key schools of the Son Tay - Ba Vi cluster but chose to study at the high school near his home - Minh Quang High School, the school with the lowest entrance score in Hanoi, an average of 3 points/subject to pass.
When he was in secondary school, Tien won second prize in the city's geography competition. His neighbor is Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung, a geography teacher at Minh Quang High School. Tien studied with her since he was young and confidently went to Minh Quang School to continue studying with her. This choice of following an "acquaintance" brought Tien to the national competition.
Studying in an educationally "lowland" environment, Tien said he was very happy. The teachers were dedicated, the friends were friendly and helped each other. Outside of class time with his teacher, Tien joined online geography groups, and asked his seniors who had won prizes for excellent geography students to support and guide him on how to do difficult exercises.
Ms. Hong Nhung taught Tien until grade 11, then she took a break to have a baby. Tien was tutored by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy in grade 12. Last year, Tien took the exam to advance to a higher level and won second place in the city, but could not pass the second round to enter the national team.

This year, Tien succeeded, becoming the only village school student in the geography team with 19 other students who are all geography students from 4 specialized high schools and specialized classes in Hanoi city.
As a result, Tien won third prize with… regret. Because he was only 0.25 points short of reaching second prize. Tien said he had misread the question of the 1-point question and felt that he had done below his ability in the national exam.
However, Tien's result brought Minh Quang High School its first national prize and the third national prize for the entire Ba Vi district.
Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong honored Do Chi Tien and Minh Quang High School. The leader of the capital's education sector shared that there are good students and good teachers everywhere. As long as schools invest in key educational work in the right direction, teachers and students will be given wings to fly high and far.
The national excellent student exam is a valuable experience.
The two months of training for the national team at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted were Tien's first two months away from his parents. But the feeling of being away from his family was not as overwhelming as when he studied with his gifted classmates.
Tien confessed that at first he was "scared" and "out of breath" because his friends were so good. There were many things Tien did not know, many topics he had not studied, but his friends already knew. In the first few tests, Tien got bad scores, not enough to win a prize.

However, Tien was told by his seniors that he "just wanted to finish the review time quickly to go home". Overcoming that feeling to integrate and focus on studying will lead to a stage where he just wants the review time to be longer so he can study more.
With the support of teachers in the team and new friends, Tien gradually improved his knowledge, solved difficulties in data processing, calculations and reduced time in these questions.
Tien focuses on doing a lot of exercises, practicing skills fluently and reviewing theory thoroughly. This method helps him break through and be on the list of 12/20 students who won third prize or higher in the national high school excellent student exam for the 2023-2024 school year.
With his achievements, Tien plans to apply for direct admission to universities in pedagogy, military, and social sciences and humanities.
