At the 2024 University and College Admissions Consulting Day organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) said that in the past 2 days, when the Ministry of Education and Training's admission registration system opened to start registering wishes, it can be seen that a very large number of candidates have registered many wishes.
Specifically, on the first day of opening the registration portal, more than 600,000 wishes were registered on the Ministry of Education and Training's system. However, there are still candidates who have not logged into the system.
Ms. Thuy noted that candidates who have passed the early admission exam of universities must still register on the system of the Ministry of Education and Training. “When applying for early admission, students register on the separate system of each school, and are not yet recorded on the system of the Ministry of Education and Training. Students may be eligible to pass many early admission wishes, but will only be admitted to one major at a single school. The remaining wishes must be for other students, so they must register on the general system of the Ministry of Education and Training,” Ms. Thuy said.
Ms. Thuy said that in previous years, there were cases where candidates did not register any early admission wishes and only came back to register after the deadline set by the Ministry of Education and Training, and the system was closed.
“We have about 10 days left, so you should register. If you are still hesitant or want to change, you can still adjust your admission wishes an unlimited number of times. Therefore, there is no reason why you should not register now, and if necessary, you can adjust later,” Ms. Thuy advised.
According to Ms. Thuy, a common mistake that candidates often make during the registration process is not completing the process. “Only when you click the end button will the system record your wishes,” Ms. Thuy noted that candidates need to master the registration process on the system.
Ms. Thuy also reminded candidates that it is extremely important to arrange their preferences in order of priority on the Ministry of Education and Training's system. "Because you will be admitted to only one preference and the highest in order of priority among the total preferences you can be admitted to. We have received petitions after the admission process, saying that you want to study preference number 5, instead of preference number 2. How can you change it now that the system has recorded and filtered it?", Ms. Thuy said.
Ms. Thuy said that candidates can register an unlimited number of wishes. However, they should not register too many. “Because if there are too many, they will be confused, bewildered, and not know how to arrange their wishes in order, and easily confuse the order between wishes. Not to mention, registering too many wishes also costs a lot of admission fees,” Ms. Thuy said.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Thi Hien, Head of Training Management Department, Foreign Trade University, suggested a way that she believes is quite effective for candidates to determine a set of wishes and order of priority.
“First, you need to make a list of your desires. This list is divided into three groups. The first group is the ‘dream group’, which means that whatever you like must be on your list of desires, even if it is a bit fanciful and ambitious, it is really something you like.
The second group is the 'moderate group', including the wishes that students have not passed but compared to the benchmark scores of previous years or the expected score range of this year, the possibility of passing is high, and also the wishes that have been considered for early admission. The third group is the group that ensures risk, because in reality, there are many students who do not have any wishes for early admission. This group of wishes may be quite low, but it ensures that students avoid risks. Then, remove everything and rearrange that list according to one principle - that is in order of personal preference," Ms. Hien advised.
Candidates are concerned about whether the general system of the Ministry of Education and Training "knows" how to choose the best combination of scores for admission.
At the consultation session, a candidate expressed concern that on the registration system of the Ministry of Education and Training, he could only choose a major and a school, but there was no section for choosing a subject combination for admission. This candidate was worried because according to the initial plan, he wanted to use the combined score of group A for admission, but he did not expect that after the exam results were out, the total combined score of group D was higher.
"I don't know if I don't select any combination for admission, will the Ministry of Education and Training system automatically select my D combination score for admission, while the major accepts both A and D combinations," said this male student.
Ms. Thuy explained: “On the Ministry of Education and Training's admission registration system, there is no combination or method selection. But in this case, of course the admission system will automatically select the candidate's D group combination for consideration. That is the superiority of the system, meaning that the candidate with the better combination score will be considered first. No matter what the candidate's plan is, the Ministry's system will consider it to ensure the best for the candidate.”
Another candidate mentioned a case where a major is considered for admission based on 3 combinations but the scores of the combinations are different, "so for the same major in the same school, will each group be considered separately or together?"
Regarding this question, a representative of the Ministry of Education and Training said: “The admission quotas of the schools have been allocated to the exam groups. The benchmark scores for each group will depend on the admission quota as well as the number of candidates registered. But the system will consider students in the best possible groups to pass.
If you cannot pass this combination, the system will consider another combination and if there are still quotas available, your score is higher than the others, you can still be admitted. Candidates can rest assured that, technically, the system has been designed in an optimal way so that each candidate has the best possible chance.
