Cryptocurrencies surged after news broke that U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler announced he will step down on January 20, 2025.

Over the years, Mr. Gensler has been at the forefront of the agency’s efforts to regulate the cryptocurrency industry. He has created dissent with the broader crypto community, especially after the agency announced enforcement actions against major companies in the industry, including Coinbase, Binance and Kraken.
The announcement of his resignation comes after President-elect Donald Trump pledged to fire Gensler if elected. Cryptocurrency loyalists were excited by the news, hoping that Trump would consider creating a new White House position dedicated to cryptocurrency policy.
Along with cryptocurrencies, gold prices also continued to consolidate their recovery momentum, a rare "companionship" development because normally, these two assets have an inverse correlation.
