Measles is showing signs of increasing in Binh Thuan as the number of cases has been continuously increasing recently. Therefore, the provincial health sector has strengthened measures to prevent and control the disease, limit the spread in schools and outbreaks in the community.
Statistics show that in the first 8 months of 2024, Binh Thuan recorded 12 cases of measles. In September and October 2024, the locality recorded more than 140 cases. Accumulated to November 7, the whole province recorded 157 cases positive for measles. The disease appeared in most localities, concentrated in Tuy Phong, Phan Thiet, Ham Tan...
Notably, many cases were recorded with epidemiological links to each other at schools, communes, wards and towns in the same area.
According to the Binh Thuan Provincial Department of Health, the reason for the increase in measles is that some local residents take their children to hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City - an epidemic area - leading to the risk of spreading the virus from the epidemic area. In addition, the low vaccination rate also causes the increase in measles. According to statistics, more than 90% of cases are among children who have not been vaccinated in previous years...
To respond to the situation, the Department of Health has sent documents to departments, branches, localities and units to strengthen measles prevention and control in the area.
Accordingly, the Health sector coordinates with the Education and Training sector to strengthen communication about measles in schools and communities; mobilize children to get vaccinated fully and on schedule. Educational institutions, especially kindergartens and preschools, implement measles prevention and control according to the recommendations of the Health sector.
The health sector promotes communication activities, regularly updates information on the epidemic situation; strengthens propaganda about the risk of measles, symptoms, transmission routes, ways to detect and prevent the disease so that people can proactively prevent the disease for themselves, their families and the community.
The Provincial Center for Disease Control coordinates and directs the Medical Centers of districts, towns and cities to implement disease prevention and control, not allowing the disease to spread and break out.
At the same time, proactively monitor, detect early, isolate and treat, prevent infection, and promptly handle outbreaks; regularly assess risks, analyze the situation and propose appropriate and effective epidemic prevention and control solutions.
The Department of Health recommends that people limit large gatherings, wash their hands frequently with soap and wear masks when going to public places and crowded areas. Parents should take their children immediately to a medical facility for examination, consultation and timely treatment when they have symptoms such as fever, rash, etc.
