In the 42nd minute of the match at Vinh Stadium on June 25th, Rafaelson passed the ball with the outside of his foot to Pham Van Thanh, who was running down the wing. Goalkeeper Van Viet collided with a teammate, causing the ball to roll away, creating an opportunity for Van Thanh to shoot into an empty net. However, referee Tran Dinh Thinh blew the whistle, disallowing the goal for Binh Dinh after seeing assistant referee Pham Hoai Tam raise the flag for offside. Subsequent replays on television showed that Van Thanh was not offside and there was no contact between the two SLNA players. The match subsequently ended with a 0-0 draw.
After the match, assistant coach Bui Doan Quang Huy held a press conference in place of head coach Nguyen Duc Thang. He stated that the Binh Dinh coaching staff were very upset with the referee for unfairly disallowing a goal. "My assessment is that Van Thanh was not offside," Huy said. "The refereeing committee needs to review the incident, and if there was an error, disciplinary action should be taken against the referee."
The match was an exciting, back-and-forth affair with many dangerous moments, but both goalkeepers played exceptionally well. According to Mr. Huy, in that context, victory could be decided by a small detail. He believes that teams are fighting for every point to qualify for the top 8 after the first phase, so a referee's mistake could lead to a disadvantage and significantly affect the outcome.
Refereeing in the 2023 V-League has been plagued by errors and frequent controversies. The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) have previously used the traditional method of hiring foreign referees, but this has failed to bring about comprehensive changes. They are now hoping to implement VAR in the final rounds of the second phase.

After round 12, Binh Dinh is in seventh place with 16 points, while SLNA is in tenth place with three points less. In round 13, Binh Dinh will host HAGL, a competitor for a top-eight spot. Meanwhile, SLNA faces a tougher challenge as they travel to Hang Day Stadium to play against Hanoi FC, needing to win.
