According to the announcement of the US Department of Defense spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Devin T. Robinson posted on the official website of the department on August 26, the Conference will take place on August 22-23.

Leaders and officials attending the conference discussed ways to address defense and security challenges caused by climate change and strengthen regional cooperation to respond, affirming that climate change is an existential threat to national security.

Speaking at the conference, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks emphasized the Pentagon's determination to support strategies that mobilize the entire government apparatus, and the strategies of partners and allies.

“None of us can solve the climate challenge alone,” Hicks said, adding that countries have a better chance of addressing the threat if they work together.

"Climate change is a global security issue. It has no borders or boundaries. It has no respect for sovereignty and it cannot be explained away," the US official stressed.

The conference is part of a series of regional-level activities, organized in coordination with security and defense agencies and attended by military and civilian officials, scientists, representatives of non-governmental organizations... with the aim of highlighting how climate change is increasingly affecting military readiness, operational capacity and infrastructure resilience...

All of this requires urgent coordinated action across the region.

According to Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and the Western Hemisphere, Rebecca Zimmerman, climate change is reshaping the strategic landscape, requiring dynamic responses and enhanced partnerships to ensure our forces are ready to meet the challenges, while committing to strengthening partnerships across the region to strengthen regional readiness and response mechanisms.

During the conference, delegates focused on ways to integrate resilience building into defense planning, resource allocation, operations and security cooperation to ensure readiness is maintained, discussed strategies for building climate-resilient military forces, operations and infrastructure, using advanced data analytics tools for decision-making and enhancing the key role of military forces in disaster preparedness.

These discussions will continue within the framework of the Working Committee on Climate and Environmental Challenges from a Defense Perspective, held on the occasion of the Meeting of Defense Ministers of the Americas in October in Argentina.
