Childhood in and out of the temple

Nguyen Quoc Huy (18 years old, living in My Thanh village, Hoa Thang commune, Phu Hoa district, Phu Yen province) is his mother's illegitimate child. "After I was born, my mother left me at the hospital and left. My mother and my maternal family decided from the beginning that they could not raise me because my mother already had a family at that time," Huy said he knew this because he heard about it when he grew up a little.

At that time, a woman named Le, while going to see a doctor, felt sorry for the child and asked for the child to be raised by Mrs. Sim (Mrs. Le's younger sister). Mrs. Sim and her husband were called by Huy as his adoptive parents and given a name.

When Huy was 4 years old, his adoptive parents divorced and sent him to a temple, where the monks raised him. He stayed at the temple for two years, and the abbot sent Huy to his sister's family, where he was educated until he finished elementary school. Huy was then sent back to the temple by this family, where he stayed until he finished 7th grade. However, for some personal reasons, the abbot sent Huy back to Mrs. Le's family to raise him in 8th grade.

At the beginning of high school, Huy proactively asked to live at Long Khanh Pagoda, Hoa Thang Commune, Phu Hoa District. Here, besides class time, Huy spent the rest of his time at the pagoda studying, reading sutras and helping with some of the pagoda's chores.

“I have been used to frequently changing living environments since I was little, so I can adapt without any problems,” Huy said.

Teachers do not leave students alone in life.

With a passion and aptitude for natural sciences, Huy mostly self-studied and reviewed for exams at the temple after class. Huy was exempted from tuition fees for 3 years of high school.

Ms. Luong Thi Kim Thu – Huy’s 12th grade homeroom teacher at Tran Quoc Tuan High School – shared that at first she was impressed by the student who had a shaved head, wore blue clothes, and was quite quiet. When confiding, the teacher knew that Huy did not want to become a monk, but only wanted to go to school. But because he had no money, Huy thought that after finishing high school he would join the army, then use the money to learn a trade to make a living. I tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep, trying to find a way to help my student,” Ms. Thu said.

Then, through the introduction of Ms. Thu, Huy received financial support from the vice principal of a high school in Dong Hoa town (Phu Yen province), as well as encouragement from the teachers at the school. "Huy's academic performance clearly improved from the second semester of grade 12, and he finally passed the entrance exam to his dream school. The teachers were very happy and pleased with that," Ms. Thu shared.

Don't blame anyone, want to be the best version of myself

Huy said he was grateful to his mother for giving birth to him and to those who raised him.

“I have never hated or blamed my mother or my maternal family, even though I have never met my biological mother,” Huy confided.

For Huy, although he was not raised by the warmth of his biological parents, this young man always told himself that he was lucky to be able to go to school, and he has constantly strived to realize his dream of entering the university gate. The most precious thing is that Huy did not let himself become spoiled.

In the recent exam, Huy scored 25.35 points for the combination of math, physics, and chemistry, including priority points, and was admitted to the computer science major at the University of Economics , Ho Chi Minh City. “I want to work in the information technology industry in the future,” Huy said.

The first time he came to Ho Chi Minh City, Huy was given some pocket money by the temple to go to school. Co May dormitory also provided free accommodation and food allowance. Not having a motorbike, Huy went to school every day by bus. Not having a laptop, every time he did his homework, he had to go to the internet cafe near the dormitory.

“Facing the difficulties ahead, I will never give up, courageously overcome to become the best version of myself.

I will try to study well to get a scholarship at school to reduce tuition fees. After graduating and working, I will also support students in the same situation as me," Huy shared and hoped to receive the Tuoi Tre Newspaper's "Tiep Suc Den Truong" scholarship to buy a laptop as a study tool.

Looking out at the school yard in front, Ms. Thu shared and sent a few words of advice to her students: “At first, Huy was difficult to approach, but only those who understand him are willing to share. I am happy for him, but also worried because 4 years of university is a relatively long journey.

I hope Huy is confident and determined to continue because there are still many people around him who are willing to help. Huy, don't give up halfway and open your heart more!"

Mr. Vo Huu Vinh – head of My Thanh village, Hoa Thang commune – confirmed that Nguyen Quoc Huy lives at Long Khanh pagoda and is an adopted child. The local authorities have also shown concern for Huy’s situation.
