This information was shared by Dr. Ngo Van Tuoi, Deputy Director of Cu Lao Minh Hospital, at a working session with the Department of Health Environment Management (Ministry of Health) on November 19, within the framework of the program to build green and sustainable medical facilities.
Cu Lao Minh Hospital is a provincial hospital located in Mo Cay Nam district, Ben Tre province, receiving an average of 1,200 - 1,400 outpatients and about 400 inpatients per day.

Since 2016, the deep saline intrusion in Ben Tre has caused many difficulties in health care. In particular, hospitals have had to use bottled water for important activities such as bathing newborns, leading to high costs and many inconveniences.
To overcome this, the hospital has implemented a system to filter brackish water into clean water with support from the World Health Organization (WHO). This clean water source is used effectively in activities such as: Taking care of newborns; Providing water for operating rooms, ensuring absolute safety; Washing, steaming and drying medical instruments; Cooking for patients in the nutrition and dietetics department.
“ This system helps save significant costs compared to using bottled water. More importantly, clean water from the system protects health, especially the sensitive skin of newborns," Dr. Tuoi emphasized.
The hospital's brackish water treatment system operates automatically, providing sufficient clean water to essential areas without the need for continuous operation. In particular, the system has been optimized to reduce wastewater volume, with operating costs mainly being electricity.

Ms. Phan Thi Ly, Head of the Department of Health Environment Management (Ministry of Health), highly appreciated this model and said that this is the first hospital in the Southwest region to deploy a system to treat brackish water into clean water. The success of the model not only helps save costs, but also improves the quality of health care, contributing to adapting to climate change.
The brackish water treatment model at Cu Lao Minh Hospital is expected to become a model solution that can be replicated at other medical facilities in the region, especially those affected by saltwater intrusion in the dry season. The implementation of this system will not only help solve the problem of clean water shortages but also enhance the health sector’s ability to adapt to the challenges of climate change, while ensuring that public health is increasingly better cared for.
