The 2024 election is fundamentally different from the 2020 election — a reality that President Joe Biden must confront as he campaigns and meets with voters in the current moment.

Times have changed.
Four years ago, amid a global pandemic and the constant chaos of Donald Trump’s presidency, many voters craved a sense of normalcy. They wanted a stable, experienced leader and a return to effective governance, according to CNN political analyst Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University.
Joe Biden has “made his timing” by presenting himself as a steady hand who can act as an “antidote” to the chaos and “dysfunction” of the Trump era.
Four years later, that appeal seems less compelling as voters show a hunger for a stronger, more assertive leader who can tackle myriad issues, from the cost of living to climate change and immigration.
According to the author's article on May 30 on CNN , some polls show that Mr. Biden's support rate is chasing Mr. Trump nationwide and in most important swing states.
Former President Trump, despite facing multiple criminal charges, is still attracting traditional Democratic support and among black, Latino and young voters.
Mr. Trump is entering a period of victory in the hot summer months.
Need a solution that “touches both hearts and minds”
Why is that? Why is President Joe Biden having trouble getting traction? Despite massive campaign spending in recent months and a legislative record that is considered one of the most effective presidents in American history, President Biden is having a hard time overcoming “obstacles.”
That’s largely because 2024 is different than 2020, and Biden needs to adjust his strategy accordingly, says Julian Zelizer. While he had success with a playbook approach in the last election, the nature of this race means he needs to offer more emotional and compelling solutions that appeal to voters’ hearts, not just their heads.
Bold and decisive leadership
The 2024 election will hinge on the candidates’ ability to provide bold and decisive leadership to address the many challenges facing America, from high prices and interest rates that are impacting household budgets to immigration patterns that have created financial and social stress in many communities. There are also dangerous flashpoints from conflicts abroad and divisive dinner conversations at home, fundamental threats to women’s reproductive rights, safety and security concerns among key constituencies (from voters of color to Latinos to Jews), and alarming weather patterns that provide a constant reminder that climate change is an urgent and ongoing issue.
Putting Trump aside, one can see that President Biden has struggled to achieve these goals over time. The article suggests that the problem may stem from his age, his personality, or some other factor. Regardless, it is a problem.
Meanwhile, Mr. Trump has tried to project the message that he is an anti-hero who will do anything to protect those who protect him. “I am your justice… I am your retribution,” he has said at his rallies. So for Americans who may be unhappy with the way things are, Mr. Trump seems to offer the possibility of changing the status quo.
To energize Democratic voters and win back Americans who supported Trump or are considering staying out of the election, President Biden must deliver a message that fits the needs of 2024, rather than rehashing an outdated narrative from 2020.
The good news is that while Biden may be behind in the polls, this is a very close race, with a slight tilt in his favor in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin that could be a path to a second term.
Boasting about his experience and even his legislative successes will not be enough. Those arguments are only relevant in 2020, and even in the 2022 midterms, the article argues. To begin moving forward, Mr. Biden must tap into his inner Barack Obama and emerge as a president with the charisma and imagination to use four more years in office to usher America into a more vibrant era that the next generation can inherit.
