Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick warned the Biden administration would make a mistake if it confronted members of the Texas National Guard and other state units.
Concerns about gridlock and tensions between federal and state agencies have increased after the Supreme Court ruled that federal border agents can cut through razor wire fences installed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott's administration on the US-Mexico border.
This is part of the "Lone Star" campaign that Texas has unilaterally implemented over the past few years to prevent illegal immigration and crime and drug trafficking at the border. This campaign shows the discord in views between the Biden administration and the Texas government on the issue of immigration.
“The biggest mistake the Biden administration could make is to confront our law enforcement or our military, the Texas National Guard, when we are actually doing the job the American people want us to do,” Patrick said on January 26.
"If federal forces come down to Texas and create a situation (of confrontation), the whole country will see clearly that the Democrats are willing to take over a state that is acting according to its constitutional right to protect our people," he warned.
After the Supreme Court issued the above ruling, Governor Abbott stated: "We will continue to deploy barbed wire fences on the border to prevent illegal immigration."
He also criticized Biden's "reckless open border policies" and asserted that barbed wire is "an effective deterrent to illegal border crossings."
The Biden administration previously said the barbed wire system prevented federal agents from accessing key areas of the US-Mexico border in Shelby Park in Eagle Pass and called the tactics used by Texas cruel and inhumane to migrants.
Illegal immigration at the US-Mexico border is expected to become a hot topic in this year's US presidential election.
