(CLO) Officials in Mexico's Sinaloa state said on Sunday that at least 14 people were killed on Saturday in a wave of violence that erupted after drug lord Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada was arrested in the United States.

The majority of Saturday's killings occurred in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state, the state prosecutor's office said on Sunday, adding that it had opened 10 investigations into the killings that left 14 people dead.

In recent months, fighting in Culiacan between criminal groups fighting for control of territory has disrupted daily life, forcing businesses and schools to close.

Violence has erupted in the Pacific coast state since late July after Sinaloa cartel leader El Mayo was arrested and taken to an airport in Texas, where he was immediately detained by authorities.

New Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has deployed hundreds of troops with armored vehicles and heavy weapons to Sinaloa in an attempt to control the violence, but clashes have continued.

Authorities reported on Saturday that they found refrigerated containers containing human remains, including a human head, in several areas of Sinaloa with symbols of gangs fighting over territory.

On Tuesday, a shootout on the outskirts of Culiacan left 19 suspected gang members dead, and a local gang leader was arrested.

At least 172 people have been killed and more than 200 others reported missing in Sinaloa state from September 9, when officials say the wave of violence began, through October 18.
