Working with Can Gio district, the Prime Minister requested Ho Chi Minh City to coordinate with relevant agencies to carry out the next tasks and work with investors to promote implementation. The Prime Minister commented that the proposed location for the seaport has the ability to attract international transit goods, competing with major ports in the region such as Singapore, Malaysia and international ports. However, this port does not compete with Cai Mep - Thi Vai port but complements and coordinates to best promote strengths.
According to the project, Can Gio International Transit Port is proposed to be located in Phu Loi Islet (Thanh An Commune, Can Gio District). This islet has more than 93 hectares of protective forest, of which more than 82 hectares are forested land and is surrounded by Thi Vai River and Theu River. This area is located in the transition zone of Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve, so the project does not affect the core forest area.
According to the proposal, the port has a total river length of 7.2km, and can accommodate the world's largest container ship with a capacity of 24,000 Teus. The total investment is expected to be nearly 5.4 billion USD. The project is divided into 7 phases, expected to be completed in 2045 (phase 1 will be completed in 2027).
