According to Thai Post , 16 clubs in the Thai League received surprising information at a meeting on June 27 about the price of broadcasting rights for the 2023/24 season. The request to buy the Thai League rights for next season did not reach the desired price. One bidding company even offered 50 million baht ( 1.4 million USD ), 20 times less than the period when the Thai League television rights reached the 1 billion baht ( 28.1 million USD ) mark.
Thairath said that many Thai fans were talking about this and thought that the price of 50 million baht was lower than the transfer price of Chanathip Songkrasin from Kawasaki Frontale to BG Pathum United (70 million baht, or 1.9 million USD - PV).
Madam Pang, president of Port FC and Newin Chidchob, president of Buriram United Club at the meeting on June 27.
Meanwhile, Daily News questioned the offer to buy 50 million baht because according to estimates, the cost of organizing the Thai League season 2023/24 has reached 343 million baht.
Many Thai League clubs cannot sit still because the sharp decrease in television rights will affect the amount of copyright they receive. Previously, clubs in the top league of the Golden Temple received 20 million baht in television copyright each year.
According to Khobsanam , the Thai League organizers want to sell the tournament's television rights for at least 500 million baht per season, but no one is willing to pay that amount. True Visions is said to only want to broadcast matches of big clubs. Moreover, True Visions has the Premier League rights, which are played at the same time as the Thai League, so they do not see the need to buy more domestic rights.
According to Daily News , the price of the Thai League television rights in 2017 was 900 million baht ( 25.3 million USD ), and by 2018 it reached 1 billion baht ( 28.1 million USD ). In 2019, the price increased to 1.1 billion baht ( 30.9 million USD ) and by 2020 it was 1.2 billion baht ( 33.7 million USD ). However, in 2020, the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, so True Visions did not pay the full amount for that season. In the 2021/22 season, the price of the Thai League rights decreased to 800 million baht ( 22.4 million USD ).
The 2023/24 Thai League season will kick off in mid-August with 16 teams competing. However, the copyright issue is causing headaches for the organizers and clubs.
