According to information from the Center for Environment and Urban Areas of Gio Linh district, the district's centralized landfill after many years of operation has exceeded the design time and capacity of the project, posing a risk of environmental pollution and affecting people's lives.

Accordingly, the Gio Linh district centralized landfill, invested by the Quang Tri Environmental Monitoring and Engineering Center, was built in Binh Minh village, Gio Binh commune (now Binh Minh village, Phong Binh commune) with a scale of 7.6 hectares.

In 2014, the project was completed (phase 1) and handed over to the District Center for Environment and Urban Affairs for management and operation with a scale of 2.2 hectares.

Currently, the landfill has 2 landfill cells, the landfill cells are designed in a semi-submerged style with a digging depth of 5.5 m, a filling height of 2.4 m with an area of 4,224 m2 per cell. The leachate treatment area includes a leachate collection pit, an equalization tank, a sand and gravel filter tank, and an underground filter bed with trees.

According to the design task, this project has a usage time of 4 years with a capacity of 30,000 m3 of household waste per cell. However, the actual usage since the handover has exceeded the design time and capacity of the project.

Currently, the filled landfill cells are higher than the surrounding dikes. At cell number 1, the highest point is 6 m, the current volume of garbage calculated from the dike surface is about 8,600 m3 ; cell number 2, the highest point is 7 m, the current volume of garbage calculated from the dike surface is about 9,500 m3 .

Every day, Gio Linh district's centralized landfill receives and processes about 43 tons of domestic waste, equivalent to about 16,000 m3 /year.

Currently, the landfill cannot receive and process household waste, which poses a serious risk of environmental pollution and greatly affects people's lives if there is no plan to renovate or build a new landfill.
