With the goal of sustainable development and becoming a high-quality island city, Phu Quoc has launched a series of key projects to improve the quality of healthcare, education, tourism and environmental cleaning systems across the island.
In the No List 2025 - Destinations not to go list of Fodor's, Bali and Kyoto are mentioned, because these places are overloaded with tourists, causing many negative consequences for the environment and people's lives. On the contrary, the world famous travel magazine Travel & Leisure honored Phu Quoc as the second most attractive island in the world after Maldives, with the advantage of attractive natural scenery, luxurious resorts, especially the new destination is not overloaded with tourists.
Focus on upgrading urban infrastructure
With tourism potentials highly appreciated by the world and remarkable socio-economic development over the past 20 years, it is not difficult to understand why Phu Quoc has been approved for a master plan until 2040 to become a large, modern, high-quality, national-level tourism, resort, and international trade center in the region and the world.
After nearly a year since the general planning project until 2024 was approved, each direction has been and is being vigorously implemented by Phu Quoc, one of the bright spots is to thoroughly handle many cases of illegal construction, encroachment, and occupation of forest land and state-managed land. From there, every square meter of encroached sidewalk is returned to the people, areas with great potential for tourism development are clearly identified, helping to attract investment and develop urban infrastructure.
A typical example is last November, the Red Beach area of An Thoi ward with great tourism potential but for many years "forgotten" with boat ports, households and spontaneous shops causing a shabby situation, now started to be renovated into a 1.7km wide public beach to serve the needs of residents and tourists. In the next phases of the project, Red Beach will be built a large-scale sea square, becoming a new cultural and tourism center of the city, meeting the needs of swimming, entertainment, and organizing international-scale events.
In attracting high-spending tourists and international immigrants, Phu Quoc also sees limitations in educational and medical facilities. Therefore, in the past year, in addition to investing in upgrading facilities for schools and renovating existing hospitals and medical stations, Phu Quoc also launched the Phu Quoc Sun Hospital project.
With a scale of 06 floors, total floor area of up to 19,000m2, Phu Quoc Sun Hospital will be equipped with the most advanced machinery system and a team of leading domestic and international consultants and doctors. With the goal of bringing high-quality health care services to the people and absolute peace of mind for tourists when traveling or choosing to reside long-term on the Pearl Island, the Hospital will invest in developing important specialties such as Pediatrics, Cardiology and Stroke Prevention, Emergency Resuscitation Department, Maxillofacial Department, Cosmetic Department and General Health Examination Department.
It is forecasted that by 2030, Phu Quoc City will have to provide clean water for about 500,000 people with a capacity of 120,000 m3/day. Phu Quoc City leaders recognize that the issue of sustainable water resource management in Phu Quoc has become urgent. Therefore, many clean water supply projects are being urgently implemented by the city, such as the spillway on Cua Can hanging lake with about 3 million m3 of water and combined with Duong Dong lake with 4 million m3. The city is also seeking approval for the water supply, water supply and wastewater collection and treatment system, so that by 2040, the island city can confidently meet the living conditions of an urban area of 680,000 people, including an official population of 430,000 people.
Phu Quoc – A high quality resort center in the future
“Birds of a feather flock together” is perhaps the most accurate description of Phu Quoc tourism at the moment. This “fertile” land with more than 5 million visitors per year, including nearly 1 million international visitors in 2024, and a tourism growth rate of more than 38% per year has attracted a series of domestic and international tourism “giants”. Rixos - the all-inclusive hotel brand in the high-end segment of Ennismore will add a bright badge to Phu Quoc, in the collection of world-famous brands, alongside Curio Collection by Hilton, Marriott, IHG...
In December, Sun Group continued to start the project of Aspira Tower, a design inspired by the image of sails on the West Coast beach, Hon Thom Island. In particular, the 36-storey central tower will become a luxury resort - entertainment - commercial complex including The Luxury Collection Hon Thom hotel with a "million dollar" view, infinity pool, sky club... These famous projects and brands will contribute to making Phu Quoc a "darling" of the upper-class tourist community in the near future.
Mr. Francois Boudin - Representative of Rixos Hotels shared: to invest in a large-scale hotel, this brand pays great attention to infrastructure, the position of the land on the resort map, traffic connectivity and tourism ecosystem. This place has all the entertainment experiences and activities that customers are looking for ," said Mr. Francois.
Mehmet Kin - Vice President of Crystal Bay, a large travel agency that accounts for the majority of Russian and CIS tourists to Vietnam, commented: " Thailand, Phuket and Pattaya used to be very famous destinations, but in my opinion, Phu Quoc is much better than those places, because the infrastructure is ready, the projects are new, and the services are much better ."
According to InterNations, a community of more than 5.3 million members from 420 cities worldwide, Vietnam is ranked 8th in the list of livable countries for foreigners. With the advantage of owning a luxurious tourism and resort ecosystem, high-quality infrastructure, it is not difficult for the "Pearl Island" to become an internationally livable destination in the future.
