Total tourism revenue ranked 4th in the Mekong Delta region
Tourism is considered the economic spearhead of Bac Lieu province. Despite many difficulties after the pandemic, the industry still develops strongly and progressively every year.

Accordingly, in 2022, service and tourism revenue will reach about 3,250 billion VND, reaching 108% of the plan, up 155% over the same period; welcoming about 3,670,000 visitors, reaching 111% of the plan, up 153% over the same period; of which 1,650,000 visitors will use accommodation services, reaching 103% of the plan, up 184% over the same period; international visitors are estimated at 3,500 visitors.
In 2023, the number is even more impressive when welcoming about 4.2 million visitors, with a total revenue of about 3,850 billion VND, ranking 4th in the Mekong Delta. Since then, tourism development has contributed to promoting economic restructuring, attracting investment, creating jobs and improving people's lives.
Tourism revenue is currently increasing in parallel with the number of tourists coming to Bac Lieu. During holidays and Tet, the province’s tourism machinery operates at maximum capacity to serve tourists.
During the 2024 Lunar New Year (from the 29th to the 8th day of the Lunar New Year) alone, the number of tourists to Bac Lieu will reach about 335,000 (including visitors and domestic tourists), an increase of 11.7% compared to 2023; of which, about 28,000 will use accommodation services; about 6,000 will be international visitors (including overseas Vietnamese returning home for Tet).
Total tourism service revenue is about 175 billion VND, an increase of 12% compared to 2023; of which, revenue from restaurant - hotel - catering services is about 88 billion VND. It can be said that the increasing tourism revenue is a premise and opportunity to promote tourism in this province, thereby aiming to retain and increase tourists in the coming years.
Assessing the tourism industry of Bac Lieu province in recent years, Mr. Pham Van Thieu, Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee, commented: "Bac Lieu tourism has continuously had many strong developments, the number of tourists increases by an average of 15% each year, total revenue from tourists increases by an average of 20% each year. Tourism services are increasingly rich and diverse, creating many branded tourism products in the region and the whole country..."
Cultural characteristics create great advantages for tourism development.
As a land with a long history, where three cultures, Vietnamese, Chinese and Khmer, intersect, Bac Lieu has its own unique tourism characteristics compared to other places in the region. Although each ethnic group has its own culture, over time, all have merged and harmonized to form a very unique and distinctive culture for Bac Lieu.
Spanning all months of the year, the colors of the festivals: Da co hoai lang, Nghinh Ong, Chol-chnam-thmay, Ooc-om-boc, Ky yen... of the three ethnic groups Kinh - Khmer - Hoa make Bac Lieu always attractive and captivating in the eyes of friends from afar.
What is special about Bac Lieu culture is that the festivals of this ethnic group always have the participation and joy of other ethnic groups. Therefore, Bac Lieu culture is the crystallization of the exchange and blending of distinct cultural features, clearly expressed in cuisine, spiritual life, and spiritual culture.
Because of these characteristics, over the years, Bac Lieu has formed famous tourist destinations. Currently, Bac Lieu has 11/43 typical tourist destinations recognized by the Mekong Delta Tourism Association. In particular, there are 9 tourist destinations in Bac Lieu City.
Along with typical tourist destinations, Bac Lieu is implementing more research solutions, developing more types of agricultural - rural tourism, eco-tourism, community tourism through the resonance, exchange of culture, architecture, beliefs and traditional festivals of the 3 ethnic groups Kinh - Hoa - Khmer. Thereby, creating diversity in tourism products, attracting more tourists to Bac Lieu to visit and experience.
Change to make tourism an important economic sector
Mr. Ly Vy Trieu Duong - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Lieu province said: "2024 is identified as the "sprint" year to implement the 13th National Party Congress, the Resolution of the 16th Provincial Party Congress and the 5-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (2021 - 2025 period) of the province.
Accordingly, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism is determined to accelerate the implementation of tasks in all areas of the industry, especially the task and solution of "Promoting tourism development, striving to become an important economic sector of the province, one of the tourist centers of the Mekong Delta region."
In the first quarter of 2024, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism directed to strengthen preparations for technical facilities and human resources in the tourism sector during the Lunar New Year; inspect and control the service quality of tourism service businesses, especially at tourist accommodation establishments, tourist transportation, tourist areas and attractions, restaurants serving tourists, shopping centers, entertainment centers, etc.

“Bac Lieu continues to attract social resources to invest in developing the tourism industry’s technical infrastructure system and investing in developing transport infrastructure for key areas, tourism development drivers… to contribute to making Bac Lieu one of the tourism centers of the Mekong Delta region” - Mr. Luong Vy Trieu Duong emphasized.
On March 29, in Can Tho City, Kinh te & Do thi Newspaper in collaboration with the Mekong Delta Tourism Association and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City will co-organize the Workshop "Building and developing tours, routes and unique tourism products in the Mekong Delta".
The purpose of the workshop is to evaluate and find solutions to build and develop tours, routes and specific tourism products in the Mekong Delta to actively contribute to developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector.
At the same time, analyze the advantages, potentials, opportunities and challenges in the tourism business to find solutions for management approaches. Coordinate between management units, tourism service businesses and tourist destinations, ensuring effective implementation of tour programs, tourism routes and experiences of unique tourism products in the Mekong Delta.
