The men's singles quarter-final matches of the 2024 Australian Open have been determined, of which the final men's singles quarter-final match will be a duel between two opponents with many fates - Carlos Alcaraz (Spain, ATP rank 2) and Alexander Zverev (Germany, ATP rank 6).

According to the “procedure”, Carlos Alcaraz will play Novak Djokovic in the “new classic dream final”; but before that, he will have to face Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.

Of course, let's not talk about "those processes" yet, first the 20-year-old Spaniard will have to face Alexander Zverev, who always gives Alcaraz some difficult moments on the court.

Zverev just went through a long 5-set battle - he struggled to defeat Cameron Norie (Britain, ATP rank 22) in the penultimate round 4 match with a thrilling score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6 and 7-6 (10-3). The match lasted more than 4 hours.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz appeared to be more relaxed. He easily defeated Miomir Kecmanovic (Serbia) after only 3 games with a score of 6-4, 6-4 and 6-0 in the final round 4 match. This victory showed Alcaraz's power and very good form.

“I feel better and better every day,” Alcaraz said after reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time in his career. “Every match I play here at Rod Laver Arena, I feel very comfortable.”

“Obviously, it feels great to be here. It’s a great stadium, a beautiful stadium. I really enjoy playing here, and performing at my best. It feels like home, it’s fantastic, so I hope to keep feeling better like this every day.”

For his part, Zverev was in a “slightly inferior” position. He admitted after the difficult victory: “After all, this is a Grand Slam arena. Everyone is playing at their best here. Cam played really well and I'm happy to get through the match.”

But while Alcaraz is feeling better by the day and Zverev acknowledges the difficulties, the upcoming quarter-final will be “a completely different story”, as the two opponents face each other for the eighth time in their careers.

In the Next Gen generation, Alcaraz - Zverev can be considered a very interesting pair of "arch-rivals, talented people". Even though Alcaraz is rising to become the "leader" of the young generation, his direct confrontation index is still slightly lower than Zverev's.

They have played each other seven times in the past, with the German of Russian descent currently leading 4-3. Zverev has won the first matches. He also beat his opponent in their most recent encounter - in the group stage of the ATP Finals last year.

However, if only counting the Grand Slam arena, they are temporarily tied 1-1, when Zverev won after 4 sets in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros 2022 and Alcaraz defeated his opponent in the quarterfinals of the US Open 2023 after only 3 sets. This will be another Grand Slam quarterfinal, which will be very interesting.

Head to head record Alcaraz vs Zverev

_Round of 32 Mexican Open 2021: Zverev wins 6-3, 6-1

Meanwhile, the third men’s singles quarterfinal will be between Daniil Medvedev (Russia, ATP No. 3) and Hubert Hurkacz (Poland, ATP No. 9). Both won important victories over their opponents in the fourth round matches that took place earlier in the day.

Medvedev ended the adventure of Nuno Borges (Portugal, ATP rank 69) with a victory of 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7 and 6-1. Hurkacz also ended the dream journey of Arthur Cazaux (France, ATP rank 122) with a result of 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

This match is also a different kind of “rivalry”. In the past, Medvedev played Hurkacz 5 times, he only won 2 and lost 3. Hurkacz won both of his recent matches, both in 2022; however, they did not face each other in 2023.

In the women's singles, Zheng Qinwen (China, ranked 15th in WTA) continued to demonstrate her formidable talent when she defeated Oceane Dodin (France, ranked 95th in WTA) with a devastating victory with an overwhelming score of 6-0, 6-3.

This is the second time in a row that Zheng has reached the quarterfinals of a prestigious Grand Slam tournament. The “Pride No. 1” of Chinese tennis will compete with Anna Kalinskaya (Russia, ranked 75th in WTA) to find the first semi-final spot of her career.
