The Argentine Institute of Statistics and Investigations (INDEC) has just announced that the country's lithium mining output in the first four months of this year increased by 49.7% compared to the same period in 2023.
The news comes as Argentina’s “white gold” mining operations are attracting new investment from foreign companies. Argentina, which is part of the “lithium triangle” along with Chile and Bolivia, has become an attractive destination for Canadian and Chinese investors.
The government of President Javier Milei is looking to raise more foreign currency for the country's struggling economy by increasing the exploitation of mineral resources.
Argentina produced 33,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate last year, ranking second in the region and fourth globally. Argentina is expected to increase its lithium production fivefold by the end of 2025, generating revenues equivalent to 1% of its gross domestic product (GDP).
Experts predict that Argentina is fully capable of increasing its capacity to over 200,000 tons of lithium carbonate per year in the 2032-2035 period.
