On August 17, Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich announced the arrest of seven suspects from an extremist Islamic group plotting to carry out terrorism in the western city of Mendoza.
On her social media account X, Ms. Bullrich said the police had dismantled a radical Islamic terrorist group and identified the ringleader.
Members of the organization used social media to discuss attack plans and various content from the terrorist group Daesh, which is banned in Russia.
“We will eliminate all criminals who intend to sow fear among the Argentine people,” Minister Bullrich affirmed.
In a statement released the same day, the Argentine federal police said: “Through anti-Christian and anti-Semitic rhetoric via Telegram and WhatsApp, the arrested individuals planned attacks against the Western community in Mendoza with content related to terrorist organizations such as the self-proclaimed Islamic State and the Taliban in Afghanistan.”
During the raid, police seized several weapons. Argentina is home to the largest Jewish community in Latin America, with more than 300,000 people.
