After its premiere, the work received critical acclaim. The San Diego Union-Tribune commented that the play successfully combined the best elements of the book and the film. The Los Angeles Times said the adaptation followed the novel closely.
The Outsiders (1983) was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, based on the 1967 novel of the same name by SE Hinton. The story is about the Greasers, a teenage gang in rural Oklahoma, who are constantly at odds with the Socials, a rival group.
When Greasers Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) and Johnny (Ralph Macchio) get into a fight that results in the death of a young man, the remaining boys are forced to go into hiding. While some try to redeem themselves, others meet tragic ends.
