At the age of 22, after graduating from Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, Nguyen Thi Tham decided to return to the hometown of General Vo Nguyen Giap to start a career. For her, the lowland land with its warm and affectionate folk songs has kept the footsteps of a girl from Minh Chau commune, Dien Chau district (Nghe An) staying by the green Kien Giang river.
During her 17 years with the Red Cross Society of Le Thuy district, she has been present at almost all the “hot spots”, accompanying the unfortunate, giving them more strength to overcome challenges in life. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham said that in recent times, the association’s humanitarian activities have created trust in the community and increasingly attracted many organizations and individuals to participate, thereby spreading good values in society.
With the innovation in resource mobilization and organization of programs and movements, in 2023, she and her colleagues mobilized to build a bridge for people in Cluster Coi, Coi Da village (Ngan Thuy commune) worth 250 million VND; built a semi-boarding kitchen at Kim Thuy Primary and Secondary School No. 2 worth 300 million VND; supported the construction of 26 new CTĐ houses worth nearly 1.2 billion VND; sponsored 3 mobile swimming pools for students of Thai Thuy Primary School, Hong Thuy Primary School No. 1, Phong Thuy Primary School with a total value of more than 550 million VND; donated 6 aluminum boats to residential clusters; awarded 200 million VND in support to purchase school equipment and carry out a number of other regular humanitarian tasks, such as: Mobilizing thousands of Tet gifts, installing free water filters, donating dozens of livestock and poultry farming livelihood models to the Bru-Van Kieu people, fishermen in coastal communes...
On behalf of the benefactors, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham visited and gave gifts to patients at Le Thuy District General Hospital. |
In particular, she has worked with association officials from the district to the grassroots to research and launch many new models, such as: "Safe School" to train emergency response skills for primary and secondary school students; open a free English reading and exchange room in Xuan Lai village (Xuan Thuy commune) and then expand English classes in Loc Thuy and Ngu Thuy Bac; mobilize restaurants, Hoang Phuc pagoda, and volunteer groups to cook porridge directly at the hospital to give free 4-6 pots/month to patients. Notably, when the flood occurred in the area at the end of October 2024, she connected with restaurants and volunteer groups to cook thousands of free meals and porridge to provide for patients and their families during the week of natural disasters.
She is also the direct operator of the Le Thuy Food Bank Community Food Warehouse, receiving food from Food Bank Vietnam and people's support to create food sources for charity programs in mountainous communes; proactively implementing early response activities before natural disasters occur in the area. In 2024, Le Thuy Food Bank Warehouse was honored to receive the FOOD HERO award from Food Bank Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City.
Not only participating in preventing and responding to natural disasters and catastrophes in the area, in 2023, Ms. Tham and volunteer groups mobilized to participate in relief efforts in Ta Ca commune, Ky Son district (Nghe An). Then, in 2024, she directly participated in a relief trip in Tuyen Quang province to help people overcome the consequences of typhoon Yagi and post-typhoon circulation. After the relief activities in the provinces, Ms. Tham decided to establish a rapid response team in the district to participate in disaster prevention and response activities with 11 members participating. The team operates under her coordination and operates voluntarily, self-contributes and mobilizes resources, and mobilizes means of members to maintain operations.
When the flood occurred in October 2024, the team was activated and participated in activities to support people before, during and after the disaster. This is the first model of the Red Cross system in the whole province and is an effective model that is highly appreciated by the Provincial Red Cross Association and the District People's Committee.
The total value of activities of the Red Cross Association of Le Thuy district from 2023 to the first quarter of 2025 reached nearly 21 billion VND, through which thousands of disadvantaged people were supported and helped. Many programs, campaigns, and movements have been effectively implemented by the association... |
As Deputy Head of the District Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committee, she successfully organized 6 voluntary blood donation campaigns in 2023 and 2024 and received more than 2,500 units of blood, reaching 135% of the target assigned by the Provincial People's Committee; At the same time, she directly participated in blood donation and pioneered in registering to donate tissues and organs after death/brain death and was granted a registration card by the National Organ and Tissue Bank in 2024.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham said that, out of sympathy for students, in the summer of 2024, she applied the initiative to implement the program "Brilliant Summer Colors, Winged Dreams", sending gifted students to free classes and clubs in the area, such as: Swimming, drawing, soccer, musical instruments..., and achieved some remarkable results.
Teacher Ngo Mau Tinh, Vice Principal of Lam Thuy Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, confided: After more than 10 years working with Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham, President of the Red Cross Association of Le Thuy district, I have had the opportunity to witness a small woman with a big heart. From the poor countryside of Le Thuy to remote areas, her footprints are bold on every volunteer journey. The connection of humanitarian groups across the country that she has silently and persistently carried out has opened up paths of hope for many unfortunate lives.
“Out there, there are certainly many people silently contributing. But I believe that, in the symphony of love, the people of Le Thuy will always mention Ms. Tham as a living symbol of compassion - the one who lights and spreads the flame of compassion, so that the volunteer movement here not only burns brightly, but also warms and lasts through the years,” said teacher Ngo Mau Tinh.
