At the seminar "Implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Practice" within the framework of VinFuture Science and Technology Week 2024, Professor Do Ngoc Minh, Director of VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Research Center, shared that currently in the treatment of cancer, especially breast cancer, the most effective method is surgery to remove cancerous tissue. However, the big challenge for doctors is to ensure that no cancer cells are left in the body without removing too much healthy tissue.

The traditional method involves taking tissue samples after surgery and sending them to a lab to check for cancer cells. This process is time-consuming and requires the patient to spend a long time on the operating table. In many cases, the patient needs to return for additional surgery to completely remove the cancerous tissue, which is painful and expensive.
From this reality, Professor Minh and his research team combined real-time optical microscopy and artificial intelligence models, helping to analyze 5,000 histopathological images per second. This is considered a tool to scan images to help doctors make quick decisions whether the surgery should continue, or the doctor needs to examine more closely.
“Artificial intelligence plays a key role in making quick decisions about whether to continue or stop surgery,” said Professor Minh. This helps patients reduce the pain caused by surgery and the effort of traveling to the hospital many times.
Another example of precision oncology is that doctors often take tissue samples from cancer patients to grow in the lab. Thousands of models are then tested to study and monitor drug treatment. This helps doctors find the optimal drug combination.
According to Professor Minh, to do this, a systematic approach is needed in the extraction of tumors, tissue samples, and cells. The process of researching tumor models is likened to an automobile production line with a robot system. This "line" is monitored by large amounts of data and artificial intelligence. This is the basis for doctors to predict problems that arise during the treatment process, assess the development direction of the tumor, and thereby adjust and improve the effectiveness of treatment.
Professor Yann Lecun.
According to Professor Yann Lecun, New York University and Director of Artificial Intelligence Science at Meta, USA, AI is being used in many fields, especially in medicine and materials science. AI helps discover new drugs and understand biological mechanisms, as well as find new materials that can support the fight against climate change; promote progress in physics, chemistry, and biology.
In addition to the benefits that AI brings, one of the major problems that society is facing is that bad actors are using AI to commit fraud and financial fraud. To deal with this problem, Professor LeCun believes that one of the most effective solutions is to use AI itself to fight bad behavior.
AI technology has also made impressive strides in automatically detecting and removing hate speech on Meta platforms. According to Professor LeCun, the number of hate speeches detected and removed by AI increased from 25% in 2017 to 95% in 2023. This shows the remarkable development of AI in understanding and processing natural language, including Vietnamese.
In response to concerns about AI replacing humans in the workforce, Professor LeCun said that AI will not cause widespread unemployment, but instead, it will create new jobs and help improve labor productivity. "AI will increase human creativity and productivity, creating new value for society," he said.
This expert commented that Vietnam has a young population, enthusiastic about technology, which will be a great advantage if combined with training programs and opportunities to learn from international experts in the application and development of AI. According to him, in the context of the rapid development of AI, the construction of AI laws is also being focused on by countries.
Sharing the same view, Dr. Xuedong David Huang, CTO of Zoom Video Communications (USA), believes that AI is bringing many benefits to people. Many chip companies are making a lot of money from AI. Large companies such as Meta, Microsoft... have developed many AI-based software applications in healthcare and education, which have been changed and brought financial efficiency.
"AI can help hundreds of young developers, small startups, create a fair playing field, discover new ideas... that makes the difference," said Dr. Xuedong David Huang.
